Earlier this year, the UK government set out its strategy for a complete rollout of smart meters starting in 2014 and ending in 2019. The rollout is the most comprehensive of its kind yet planned in any country and will entail the installation of 53 million smart meters in 30 million homes and businesses.
According to guardian.co.uk, Chris Huhne, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, stressed the benefits of the plan to both consumers, industries and the UK as a whole, and added: “The roll-out of smart meters will help us keep the lights on while reducing emissions and getting the best possible deal for the consumer.”
The government is convinced about the positive effects for both society at large and the individual consumer. Previous estimates of the savings to be made by each household have been adjusted from £14 ($22.9) to £23 ($37.5) saved on the annual energy bills by 2020.
