MIAMI, FL — (Marketwire) — 11/18/11 — Friday night marks the highly anticipated return to the ring: two-time world champion Joan Guzman, one of the most talented fighters in the world. Guzman will return to his homeland of the Dominican Republic to fight for the IBF VACANT CARIBBEAN WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
Guzman, which came in weighting 139 3/4 pounds brings an impressive record of 30-0-1 (17 KOs) while his opponent Florencio “Chombo” Castellano (Castellano will be weighed Friday morning) owns a formidable 17-4 record with (13 KOs). This event will be a twelve round bout taking place at the Jaragua Hotel and Casino in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The winner will be crowned the NEW IBF CARIBBEAN WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION.
The heavily favored Guzman shocked everyone at yesterday-s weight in coming in at 139 3/4 pounds, well below the required weight class. “I wanted to shock the world and to show my fans that Guzman is back,” Guzman said. “I will fight anybody in the world at 140, starting with Amir Khan and going down the list. I mean anybody because Guzman is back. This shows my dedication and my fire is burning again. I want to become a three time world champ and I want to stay undefeated.”
CGAQ CEO Mr. Swank expects a sellout crowd to attend this grand event that has been in the making for the last several months. This event has put CGAQ and Mr. Steven Swank on the map in the boxing world. The card titled “El Retorno Del Campeon” marks the highly anticipated return to the ring of two-time world champion Joan Guzman. IBF President Daryl Peoples, who is slated to attend the show noted, “It is exciting that Joan Guzman agreed to fight the inaugural bout for our new Caribbean Title.” IBF female super featherweight champion Amanda Serrano will also be fighting on the card.
After being away from Pro Boxing for the last eleven months, Guzman is very anxious to get back in the ring and prove to the world that he can be the fighter that everyone hoped he can be. Guzman says, “I have much to prove and I want to repay the Dominican people for all the love and support they have given me in the past. I will show the world in this bout that Guzman is back.” Guzman is looking to the future, not to the past. Florencio “Chombo” Castellano on the other hand is looking to squash his comeback. “It-s hard enough for Guzman, who is 35 years old, to get ready for the fight. I am coming to the DR to squash his so called comeback. I-m no easy guy, no opponent he can blow over. I say he makes the weight but will be completely drained in his body and sagging in his mind after this weigh in,” Castellano said.
A recent story by Michael Marley of the Examiner on Guzman, whose hand and foot speed, and defense has been compared favorably to that of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (even by “Money” himself) vows that he is returning to the ring with a vengeance. Guzman says trainer Don Saxby and conditioning coach Anthony Terranova have combined with his renewed attitude to turn him back into the slick stylist he used to be.
On another note, the company has gained some great exposure during Mr. Swank-s recent trip to New York to attend Guzman-s press conference at Lucky Seven Tapas Bar. In attendance were IBF President Daryl Peoples, State Assemblyman Guillermo Linares, along with Joan Guzman, Guzman-s manager Jose Nunez of Jay Boxing, IBF Super Featherweight-Argenis Mendez, IBF World Champion Amanda Serrano, and top executives from ESPN Deportes.
