Zencoder and Highwinds Partner to Facilitate CDN Transition to HTTP Streaming

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwire) — 11/08/11 — Zencoder, the performance leader in cloud-based video encoding, today announced a partnership with content delivery network (CDN) provider Highwinds that enables video providers to leverage HTTP video streaming over Highwinds CDN while simplifying and streamlining online video encoding and workflow. Video providers can leverage Zencoder to batch encode their libraries to H.264/MPEG-4 and perform ongoing encoding for content delivery to devices such as AppleĀ® iOS and Android, and formats including Apple HLS, Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming and Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming.

A host of factors are causing the content delivery industry to move away from non-HTTP streaming protocols and tap into the benefits afforded through HTTP delivery, including improved economics and the ability to effortlessly reach consumers on a rapidly growing variety of Internet-connected devices. Through this partnership, Highwinds and Zencoder are well-positioned to help content providers manage the transition from legacy video formats to this new and improved streaming paradigm.

“We believe more and more video delivery will move to HTTP, and we-re making it easy for video providers to make this transition,” said Zencoder co-founder and CEO, Jon Dahl. “The cloud is uniquely suited to transcode large libraries of content and to generate multiple bitrate renditions of the same video. We can do this quickly, without requiring content providers to buy expensive hardware or software.”

Zencoder-s industry-leading video input support allows customers to transcode a diverse array of video to H.264/MPEG-4, while its cloud architecture makes it simple to create multiple bitrate outputs to support adaptive bitrate streaming. Highwinds also seamlessly provides support for adaptive bitrate video delivery, which automatically adjusts the video stream to ensure that the viewer is watching video at a quality appropriate for their connection speed.

Content providers can take advantage of the speed and scale of the cloud to re-encode large video libraries to H.264/MPEG-4, while those with ongoing encoding needs can use Zencoder-s simple REST-API for painless, automatic encoding. Once encoding is complete, video can be exported directly to Highwinds CDN for distribution.

“Highwinds has always believed in partnering with companies whose technologies complement our own, and we always strive to form meaningful technology partnerships that ultimately benefit our customers,” said Steve Miller, founder and CEO of Highwinds. “We recognize that combining innovative and rapid video encoding technologies with our HTTP and adaptive bitrate streaming technologies offers a powerful value proposition to video providers looking to simplify and streamline video delivery to multiple devices.”

Zencoder offers the fastest turnaround time for video encoding in the cloud, so content providers can make the transition to HTTP streaming in a timely manner, even with HD video. For a limited time, Zencoder is offering new and existing Highwinds customers 10 percent off batch video encoding jobs.

Zencoder is the performance leader in reliable, fast, high-quality cloud-based video encoding. Founded in 2010, its products enable content providers to quickly deploy Internet video to consumers on virtually any Internet-connected device. The team-s technology vision dates back to 2008 when the team pioneered cloud-based encoding as a service with On2 Technologies (now Google). Zencoder was founded by Jon Dahl, Brandon Arbini and Steve Heffernan, a team of engineers intent on removing the complexities of putting video online and committed to making scalable, high-performance video encoding available to developers and businesses everywhere. Zencoder is the creator of one of the web-s most popular open source HTML5 video players, VideoJS which is available for free download here: .
