BOSTON, MA — (Marketwire) — 08/30/11 — Kantar Media today released July data showing growth in its Movie category, which totaled 61.2 million unique visitors (UVs) — an increase of 6.9 percent month-over-month (M-O-M) and 7.8 percent year-over-year (Y-O-Y).
With studios counting on summer blockbusters to lure consumers into the theaters, many movie-related sites, including portals, movie sites, studio sites and theater sites, received a boost in July. This corresponds with July-s $1.4 billion box-office gross, a new July record, which at an estimated 175 million tickets sold, was slightly more than July 2010. (1)
The top site in the Movies category was Internet Movie Database, or Imdb.com, which had 24.8 million UVs in July. Rounding out the top four ranking sites were Movies.yahoo.com with 19.9M UVs, Moviefone.com with 6.15M and Movies.msn.com with 3.98M UVs.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” released July 15, is now the third highest-grossing July showing ever for a single movie. Harrypotter.warnerbros.com received 890K UVs in July and likely gave its movie studio a boost; Warnerbros.com got in 3.97M UVs (+18 percent M-O-M; +1.4 percent Y-O-Y) in July. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” the other box-office leader, didn-t fare as well on the web in July, with Transformersmovie.com receiving 496K UVs — a 30.4 percent drop in only one month since its June release.
Sonypictures.com welcomed 1.2M UVs in July, up 38 percent for the month and 14 percent for the year. Two of Sony Pictures- summer flicks garnered strong traffic in July: “Zookeeper,” released on July 8, had 1.06M UVs to Zookeeper-movie.com in July, while Smurfhappens.com grabbed 1.2M UVs as movie-goers anticipated the release of “The Smurfs” on July 29.
Consumers also visited cinema/theater sites more in July 2011 than they did in July 2010. Cinemark.com led the pack with 2.02M UVs, up 23 percent for the month, but down 5.7 percent as compared to July 2010.
