In the last weekend of August and the first weekend of September, 273 professional wine tasters from 48 countries will judge more than 6,000 wines at this year”s MUNDUS VINI Great International Wine Award in the Saalbau, Neustadt.
“2010 was a very eventful year for wines and, despite this, we have noted a moderate increase in the number of wines submitted this year,” said Christoph Meininger, Managing Director of the MUNDUS VINI GmbH, speaking about the number of entries. “This proves that growers as well as importers are using MUNDUS VINI as a platform for their quality efforts and as an important marketing tool.”
Besides well-established wine nations such as Germany, Italy, Spain and France, exotic wine countries like Mexico, Tunisia and Morocco are also hoping to win medals. This year, for the first time in the contest”s history, Azerbaijan has even submitted wines.
More than 53 per cent of this year”s submitted samples are red wines (3,247 samples) whilst 33 per cent are white (1,984). The number of sparkling wines submitted (470 samples) has increased compared to last year. Rosé wines, semi sparkling wines, sherries, port wines, liquors and blanc de noirs are also represented in the contest.
Samples will be tasted blind and according to the strict guidelines of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and the International Oenologists” Association (UIOE). The international jurors include renowned wine experts such as buyers for international stores, specialist retailers, importers, oenologists and wine journalists.
The official results of the MUNDUS VINI 2011 Great International Wine Award will be announced at the end of the second weekend of tasting.
