SAN MATEO, CA — (Marketwired) — 02/09/16 — , a global leader in , today announced survey results that show U.S. workers waste as much as 30 percent of the work week (assuming a 40 hour week) preparing for and attending status meetings — on average 11.8 hours per week. U.S. workers indicated that preparing for status meetings often takes nearly as much time as the meetings themselves. Additionally, 89 percent of those who work with teams in multiple locations report frustrations, most often related to communication issues such as keeping everyone in the loop (20%) and communicating with the team (21%).
The latest Clarizen survey, conducted online by Harris Poll among over 2,200 employed adults ages 18+ in the U.S., the UK and Australia, tracked workplace trends, including organizational structure and specific job responsibilities. The survey found that:
61 percent of employed adults in the U.S. report they attend status meetings for updates on specific projects, spending 4.1 hours each week in these meetings
62 percent of U.S. workers report attending “general purpose” status meetings, devoting an average of 3.9 hours weekly in these meetings
56 percent of U.S. workers spend time preparing for status meetings each week, spending an average of 3.8 hours each week
64 percent of U.S. workers participate in conference call meetings with colleagues
Almost three-quarters of U.S. workers who participate in conference calls with colleagues (74 percent) admit to taking part in other work-related or personal tasks while on mute during conference calls:
33 percent respond to work emails
24 percent eat lunch
22 percent take care of personal emails
17 percent use the restroom (on mute)
Nearly seven in ten workers (68 percent) in the U.S. work with a dispersed team with remote individuals, and of them, 89 percent say they find some things frustrating.
Among those who work with a dispersed/remote team, “keeping everyone in the loop” (20 percent) and “communicating with the team” (21 percent) are among the biggest frustrations reported.
“Over three years of studying status meetings, the results have consistently shown that they substantially decrease the amount of time and energy workers can devote to completing actual, meaningful work,” said Viken Eldemir, GM of the Americas, Clarizen. “Solutions that drive productive, collaborative work can make a dramatic impact on the efficiency of teams by focusing meetings on strategy and planning vs. boring status updates.”

Nearly half (47 percent) of employed adults selected “collaborative” as their ideal workplace culture, while 11 percent prefer a “hierarchical” structure.
American employees who participate in conference calls with colleagues are more likely to participate in other activities while on mute during conference calls. In fact, 74 percent of U.S. employees admit to doing this compared to 65 percent in Australia and the UK.
Among U.S. workers who participate in conference calls with colleagues32 percent typically wait more than five minutes for everyone to join the call.

This survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Clarizen between January 7-11, 2016, among adults ages 18+ in Australia (n=1,004), UK (n=1,061) and the U.S. (n=2,058), and specifically among those who are currently employed: 525 in Australia, 584 in the UK, and 1,120 in the U.S. A status meeting is defined as a meeting with updates for team members on completed and active work tasks.
