Montreal-area school board now leveraging Avaya network virtualization solutions
Avaya Fabric Connect networking technology allows school boards to quickly deploy new learning applications, reduce complexity of administrative tasks and lower costs and improve security
With the fundamental nature of education changing through the widespread adoption of mobile technology, many of Canada–s largest school boards are turning to the state-of-the-art networking technology of Avaya Fabric Connect. Avaya Fabric Connect enables schools to better handle the increasing online activity used in educational settings and provide educational continuity for both students and staff.
Avaya Fabric Connect enables network virtualization that helps simplify the provision of scalable, dynamic and feature-rich cloud computing services. The multi-tenant segmentation provided by the technology was one of the reasons that the Lester B. Pearson English Montreal School Board recently green-lit a joint project for the 2015/16 school year that establishes a resilient, flexible network that is both easier to deploy and maintain.
With more than 50,000 students and over 100 locations, the Montreal-area school board needed infrastructure that could support the new ways its faculty and students engage with their educational studies. As students and staff bring a variety of devices — computers, smartphones and tablets — with which to access curriculum, Avaya Identity Engines facilitates more secure network access by defining who is able to access which areas of the network.
In a short time after implementing Avaya technology, the board has reduced the complexity of day-to-day administrative tasks on its network, lowered administrative costs, improved security and enabled easy onboarding of learning applications for students and administrative apps for managing things such as payroll, student transportation, etc.
La Commission scolaires des Samares, with more than 70 schools and 20,000 students in northeast Montreal, also implemented Avaya Fabric Connect last school year. With only one IT staff member charged with managing the entire network, the board needed to greatly simplify administration tasks. In addition to reducing duplication and saving costs, La Commission scolaires des Samares wanted to share its network with municipal services (library, water works, etc.). Avaya fabric networking technology allows for a more secure multi-tenant segmentation, enabling other services to run on the same network without an increasing risk or degrading performance.
These projects in Montreal are among the most recent at Canadian educational institutions for Avaya. In early 2014, The , the third largest in all of Ontario, deployed Avaya Fabric Connect technology. YRDSB is responsible for the education of more than 125,000 students across more than 200 schools spanning nine municipalities, and has achieved 99.999% network service uptime since implementing the Avaya solution, enabling staff and students to go about their days (and nights) without major service interruptions.
“Education is dynamic; consequently, the way our students and staff learn and work will always be in a state of flux. The new Avaya network has allowed us to access applications such as Moodle, an open-source PHP web application for producing modular internet-based courses, Google applications designed for education and our new online report card platform for teachers — however, it is also future-proof, which will allow us to easily implement other new applications down the line.”
