NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwired) — 10/27/15 — Canary, the fastest growing home security startup, today announced breakthrough advancements in learning functionality, as well as an upcoming integration with the Wink platform.
Since launching earlier this year, Canary has been analyzing data to train its computer vision algorithms to distinguish between meaningful motion events and background activity. A new feature in the app takes advantage of this analysis by allowing users to control the amount of notifications they receive with a sensitivity slider. By tuning the technology to fit their specific environment, users can adjust how the algorithm responds to their home, and filter out background noise like shadows and trees from people or pets. All activity will still be captured in the timeline so no events are missed.
“Too many monitoring and security systems rely on gimmicks or shortcuts to present meaningful video while reducing false alerts,” said Adam Sager, cofounder and CEO at Canary. “From the beginning our system was built to learn, and while this approach is more difficult, advancements like today–s computer vision update demonstrate why it–s ultimately the most appropriate and effective path.”
Canary also announced that the device will be integrated with the Wink smart home platform upon the next release of the Wink app.
“As we considered options for how Canary could work with other products, Wink–s flexible platform provided an opportunity to explore new ways to add value to Canary customers,” said Tim Hoover, Head of Product and Design at Canary. “Partnering with Wink will help us learn how our users are leveraging connected products, and better develop features to support them.”
With the new integration, Canary users will be able to switch modes through the Wink app, and layer functionality from hundreds of Wink-compatible products onto Canary–s geofencing capabilities. For example, a user could program their lights to turn off and doors to lock when they leave home and Canary auto-arms.
“Canary is an ideal solution for any home,” said Brett Worthington, VP and General Manager at Wink. “Security is a primary consideration for smart home customers, and Canary–s comprehensive approach complements our offering to enable users to easily monitor and control what happens at home, no matter where they are.”
The latest version of the Canary iOS app will also feature 3D touch, allowing users to quickly play and access video from the app icon, home screen and timeline. Geofencing functionality for auto-arming and disarming will also be updated to increase accuracy and conserve battery usage. Canary–s Android update will be released later this week, followed by an iOS update the week after.
Ahead of the holiday season, Canary products are now available at all North American Apple stores. By early November, Canary will expand into Brookstone, Lowe–s, Sam–s Club and T-Mobile, as well additional Home Depot stores.
