TELUS unveils the home of the future in Edmonton

EDMONTON, ALBERTA — (Marketwired) — 10/01/15 — TELUS is bringing the home of the future to Edmonton to demonstrate the potential of its state-of-the-art fibre optic network and offer a preview of what will be possible when homes are connected at the speed of light. Edmonton will be one of the first communities in Canada to experience the Future Home, which showcases some of the most cutting-edge technology available today and provides a sneak peek at smart-home innovations on the horizon. TELUS collaborated with technology leaders including Samsung, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent to envision the Future Home and bring the near-term possibilities enabled by dramatically faster Internet speeds to life.

The 560-square-foot Future Home, which is built to simulate a small condo, offers an immersive technology experience that demonstrates how technology will help us to live more efficiently than ever before:

The arrival of the Future Home follows TELUS– that it is investing $1 billion in Edmonton to connect more than 90 per cent of homes and businesses directly to the company–s state-of-the-art fibre optic network over the next six years.

“The TELUS fibre optic network is the most advanced communications infrastructure available in the world today and is laying the groundwork for the smart homes, businesses and cities of tomorrow,” said Tony Geheran, EVP & President, Broadband Networks, TELUS. “We–re investing $1 billion to build the network of the future in Edmonton and the Future Home offers a compelling glimpse into how a fibre optic network will soon transform our homes and enhance our lives.”

“Samsung products and innovation are at the forefront of the thinking behind the connected home,” said Paul Brannen, Senior Vice President, Enterprise and Mobile Solutions, Samsung Electronics Canada. “Our Smart TVs – connected and compatible through the Tizen OS to devices such as mobile phones and tablets – not only help establish a centralized system of control, but redefine the entertainment experience on multiple screens for all of the family to enjoy.”

The Future Home will be located at the TELUS World of Science in Edmonton from October 2 to 15. Admission to TELUS World of Science is not required and tours will be open to the public daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All Future Home visitors will have the opportunity to enter a contest sponsored by TELUS, where they will have a chance to win a prize pack, courtesy of Samsung, which includes a 55″ Samsung UHD TV (retail value $2,500), a Samsung Galaxy Tab S LTE 8.4 (retail value $580) and a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (retail value $850) – no purchase is necessary.
