SAN JOSE, CA — (Marketwire) — 08/03/11 — At the Wi-Fi Smart Energy Forum, currently underway at the Hyatt Regency Chicago O-Hare and hosted by the Wi-Fi Alliance®, ® Corporation, a leading developer solutions, is presenting a myriad of technology demonstrations, all showcasing how the company-s low-power Wi-Fi solutions will enable tomorrow-s smart energy market. GainSpan executives are also a featured part of the conference speaking program.
Live technology demonstrations using GainSpan-s Wi-Fi modules included: An SEP 2.0 on a Wi-Fi Smart Plug, a demonstration by GainSpan-s partner of OpenADR using a similar Wi-Fi Smart Plug, both cases showcasing the viability of IP-based networks and devices for the support of standard based Smart Energy applications; GainSpan-s GSLink application framework was also demonstrated showcasing the interaction of a Wi-Fi Smart Plug and Temperature/Light Sensor with mobile and embedded web applications.
The SEP 2.0 over Wi-Fi Smart Plug is a joint demonstration with partner Grid2Home using the SEP 2.0 compliant G2H-SE2 Software from Grid2Home and a smart plug based on a GainSpan Wi-Fi module. The demonstration showed a Wi-Fi based device responding — by turning lights on and off for example — to SEP 2.0 Demand Response/Load Control events retrieved from an Energy Service Interface (ESI). That was the first single chip implementation of SEP 2.0 over Wi-Fi, as the GainSpan GS1011 System-on-Chip (SOC) had the necessary resources to accommodate the memory footprint optimized SEP 2.0 stack in addition to the networking stack.
The OpenADR demonstration showed a Wi-Fi Smart Plug controlled by an iPhone as well as interacting with utility pricing and event information available through the OpenADR protocol. The OHS firmware stack implements secure OpenADR, supporting utility needs for demand response. The OpenADR Client can be downloaded onto the Smart Plug and responds to user-defined DR policy on the Smart Plug. The Smart Plug securely logs onto the OpenADR DRAS Server, downloads price and event data and responds to information based on the defined policy.
The GSLink demonstrations feature two Wi-Fi devices — a Smart Plug and a Temperature/Light Sensor — each being controlled by an iPhone, Android and PC. The demonstrations showed provisioning of these devices, first over-the-air in AP mode, followed by automatic discovery using mDNS/DNS-SD and then interaction using HTTP RESTful APIs.
GainSpan-s GSLink framework, based on RESTful design, standardizes application development. It incorporates a variety of features including provisioning using AP mode, APIs to enable automated provisioning, HTTP APIs with data format in XML enabling rapid integration with mobile applications, and Device and Service discovery using mDNS/DNS-SD.
“GSLink is an enabler for customers to easily develop applications — mobile applications, embedded applications or cloud based services,” said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. “And while today we-re showing SEP 2.0 profile running over Wi-Fi, a customer could easily develop other profiles using XML, HTTP and service discovery. Native applications on the iPhone or Android as well as standard web applications are also easier to develop.”
In addition to the demonstrations, GainSpan executives and technology leaders also participated in several speaking sessions. Vice President of Marketing Bernard Aboussouan was a panelist in the “Wi-Fi Smart Energy – Home Network Architecture” session on Tuesday, August 2; Software Architect Prashant Vishwanathan was a panelist in the “SEP 2.0 over Wi-Fi” session, also held on Tuesday; and CTO Lew Adams participated in the “Recent Silicon Developments to Support Smart Energy Applications” session on Wednesday, August 3.
