CALGARY, ALBERTA — (Marketwired) — 08/24/15 — Acceleware Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: AXE), a leading developer of high performance computing solutions, announced today that it is continuing its long history of user-driven innovation by adding subgridding to its already feature-rich GPU accelerated AxFDTD library. Acceleware–s ISV partner ZMT Zurich MedTech AG has already integrated subgridding into its revolutionary simulation platform, Sim4Life.
“In response to customer demand for decreased simulation runtime, we are excited to release this key feature.” said Chris Mason, Product Manager, Acceleware. “Our stable subgridding algorithm will substantially improve runtime for large simulations with small features and we are currently updating the library to support non-rectangular subgridded volumes.”
“AxFDTD–s subgridding is a key addition to Sim4Life”, said Dr. Nik Chavannes, Head of Software at ZMT. “We have been able to reduce the size of simulations by a factor of ten or more with localized mesh refinement. Without subgridding capability, running these models would not be feasible. In addition, the GPU integration adds additional orders of magnitude in runtime savings.”
About AxFDTD and Subgridding
Acceleware–s AxFDTD software is a finite difference time domain electromagnetic (EM) solver that provides engineers with a powerful and innovative tool for modelling and field simulation. Subgridding applies localized mesh refinement to regions of an electromagnetic simulation. More specifically, small features can be modelled with a fine mesh and large objects can be modelled with a coarse mesh. The traditional approach is to use a graded mesh which is dense in areas that require a fine resolution. The disadvantage is that the graded mesh extends to the boundary of the simulation and results in calculations that are not required. Ideally, as is the case with AxFDTD–s subgridding method, a mesh would only contain dense regions where small features are present. Using a localized refinement algorithm can substantially improve runtimes by reducing the number of mesh cells that need to be computed.
Most subgridding algorithms presented in the literature are known to be late time unstable, which leads to nonphysical energy generation in the mesh that typically manifests after several thousand iterations. To robustly test the implementation, Acceleware ran examples that comprised highly resonant structures for up to 10 million timesteps. The algorithm has been proven to be accurate and stable.
