Twilio Announces Video

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/14/15 — , the leading cloud communications platform company, today introduced Twilio Video with an integrated combination of scalable infrastructure services as well as software development kits (SDKs) to easily embed video into mobile apps, SaaS products, browsers and websites. The new video offering uses the WebRTC standard to ensure cross-platform interoperability. The addition of video builds on Twilio–s experience running high-scale, geographically distributed production WebRTC services, which will complete nearly one billion voice minutes this year. Twilio Video is a part of a broader product strategy to provide the real-time communications platform for any communications solution a business may need. To get started with Twilio Video, visit .

Today, developers who want to leverage WebRTC for video and voice must build their own low-latency infrastructure for signaling and registration, network traversal, and global media routing, all while supporting multiple mobile devices and browsers. Twilio addresses these challenges by providing the necessary infrastructure services, running in 28 data centers in seven regions around the world. Additionally, new client-side SDKs provide access to the real-time-communications infrastructure with developer-friendly libraries for iOS, Android and browsers.

“As communications become increasingly embedded into applications, standards like WebRTC will grow in importance. But, WebRTC is just a foundational element. Much more is required to deploy services like video. Twilio provides those additional components in a complete video offering,” said Jeff Lawson, CEO of Twilio. “We–ve taken our experience in building and running our own highly scalable and global WebRTC products and extended that significantly to offer our customers a platform for multi-person peer-to-peer video. With today–s launch, we can–t wait to see what our customers build.”

Twilio Video capabilities include:

Up to 4-way peer-to-peer calling with Twilio Video gives developers the ability to dynamically make changes to an in-progress video call, as well as switch from video to voice or vice-versa.

Registration and signaling capabilities are globally distributed and designed to scale elastically as load increases.

Automated network traversal to enable peer-to-peer connections across firewalls. The closest Twilio data center is automatically chosen as the media relay point when firewall conditions prevent a peer-to-peer connection.

Optimized for iOS and Android, Twilio SDKs ensure great quality real-time media on mobile devices, despite common network challenges such as jitter, packet loss and latency

Zendesk, a leading cloud-based customer service platform, supports Twilio Video. “We–re excited to innovate with Twilio on the new video product, and have worked closely with them to bring video onto the Zendesk platform,” said Adrian McDermott, SVP Product Development at Zendesk. “With Twilio Video, Zendesk can seamlessly add communication capabilities to our platform and enable companies to have high-quality, real-time conversations with their customers.”

Twilio Video is now available as a private beta. Video is free to use during the private beta period and will always include a free tier of usage. To sign up for beta access, visit .
