Vancouver-based announced today that it will become Canada–s first national computer coding bootcamp school to expand in multiple locations across the country. The school is set to open its doors in Toronto in March 2015 and begin offering a part-time program in Calgary in April 2015.
Boasting a 100 per cent job placement rate in both their and , the school will be starting with a part-time program in Toronto in March 2015, and opening their full-time web development bootcamp in May 2015, with their iOS bootcamp, the first of its kind in Canada, slated to start in July 2015.
“Regardless of the industry you work in or your age, Canadians everywhere are interested in learning how to code,” said Lighthouse Labs, Co-founder and CEO, Jeremy Shaki. “At the heart of Lighthouse Labs is a mission to offer an unparalleled, premier education and job opportunity based on the needs and demands of Canada–s top tech employers,” says Shaki. “This cross-country expansion will ensure Canadians have the opportunity to receive the best developer experience and education available to them.”
A fundamentally unique aspect of the program that has allowed it to succeed is the 100 per cent job placement success of students. For Lighthouse Labs, the program is only the beginning, the additional growth and learning comes from paid co-op placements, essentially making the total program length 4-5 months.
“A bootcamp helps kick start your career, but when you take that first job we expect that you won–t just settle into a 9-5 job and stop the pursuit of developing your skills,” says Khurram Virani, Co-Founder and Senior Director of Education at Lighthouse Labs. “By placing students into 2-3 month long paid co-ops, the emphasis is established that they are still expected to learn and that the company is expected to provide mentorship. It–s why we have seen such success with companies hiring our students full-time. It–s that focus on continued learning that has really helped the program succeed.”
Alumni of Lighthouse Labs have earned developer jobs at well established companies such as Telus, Hootsuite, Nike, Axiom Zen, and Unbounce. However, the success rate of students working for, or with their own startups is one of the reasons that , Canada–s premier VC-backed accelerator, has forged a new strategic partnership with the school. This marks the first time that any computer bootcamp has partnered deeply with an accelerator/seed fund.
“After seeing how seriously the Lighthouse Labs team takes computer programming education and their dedication to preparing students for jobs, our partnership became an obvious strategic alignment to form to accelerate growth nationally,” said Marcus Daniels, CEO at HIGHLINE. “Many HIGHLINE companies have hired Lighthouse Labs graduates and demand has increased given the exceptional results, so we–re thrilled to have Lighthouse Labs operate now out of our Toronto office to further give our whole portfolio a unique national talent edge. Also, we–re really excited about the co-initiatives that we–re working on that will have major national impact immediately starting in March.”
