SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 02/11/15 — Cloud Foundry Foundation, the independent governing body overseeing the fastest growing open source product in history, today named Sam Ramji to the post of CEO. The appointment adds to momentum the category-defining platform has generated over the past year as companies look to open source software to accelerate their shift to the cloud.
Ramji–s absence of ties to any of the Foundation–s member companies underscores the community–s embrace of coopetition between major vendors to drive Cloud Foundry–s success.
A 20 year veteran of the Silicon Valley and Seattle technology scenes, Ramji brings a wealth of business, product and open source experience to the CEO role. He has led strategy for API powerhouse Apigee, designed and led Microsoft–s open source strategy and drove product strategy for BEA WebLogic Integration. He is the board secretary of Outercurve Foundation and a member of multiple industry advisory boards.
In addition to Ramji–s appointment, Cloud Foundry appointed nine new inaugural board members. They are:
ActiveState – Bart Copeland
EMC – John Roese
HP – Bill Hilf
IBM – Christopher Ferris
Intel – Nicholas Weaver
Pivotal – Rob Mee
SAP – Sanjay Patil
Swisscom – Marco Hochstrasser
VMware – Ajay Patel
“Cloud Foundry is quickly becoming the enterprise platform of choice for deploying and operating applications in the cloud,” said Ramji. “Major corporations on the supply and demand sides of the cloud market are putting significant resources behind this community built platform. They–re doing so because they know they can commit to Cloud Foundry as their long-term cloud platform with confidence.”
Cloud Foundry has rapidly become the way the Fortune 500 build new digital products and capabilities.
“Our goal is to run with the speed and agility of a startup, not a traditional consortium,” said Ramji. “This will help us continue the rapid growth and momentum Cloud Foundry has achieved to date.”
Cloud Foundry members have seen significant and steady revenue growth, hundreds of thousands of product downloads and deep penetration into large enterprises. Seven Global 500 manufacturing companies, two-thirds of the world–s top insurance companies and two of the top three U.S. telcos already use Cloud Foundry for next generation products and IoT build outs. Another measure of the platform–s momentum can be seen in the meetups organized around it by the community, which are up 350% in the last 12 months.
“The growth of the Cloud Foundry project is really phenomenal. We–re seeing it primarily through increasing community contributions and new investments from the most innovative companies in the cloud computing space,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. Cloud Foundry is a Collaborative Project of the Linux Foundation. “When an open source project is experiencing this kind of growth, it is critical to have a neutral leader in place who can support the project and community and facilitate that momentum. Sam–s experience in the application development market and open source community makes him the perfect fit for helping to drive this project into the future.”
The organization will give executives, developers and technologists the opportunity to dive deep into the platform when it hosts its third annual Cloud Foundry Summit in Santa Clara, California, on May 11-12.
