NEW YORK, NY and PALO ALTO, CA — (Marketwired) — 02/02/15 — MongoDB today announced that it has overtaken PostgreSQL in the monthly ranking of the most popular databases by , an online knowledge base that curates information about database management systems (DBMS). Released today, the latest ranking lists MongoDB as the only non-relational database in the top five most popular DBMSs.
With a new score of 267, MongoDB surged 16 points to move ahead of PostgreSQL and DB2. Over the past two years, MongoDB–s influence has grown over 163%. In contrast, PostgreSQL has grown 34%, far outpacing all other relational DBMSs, but a fraction of MongoDB.
“MongoDB has emerged as the DBMS standard for modern application development,” said Dev Ittycheria, President and CEO of MongoDB. “Today–s news further supports the irreversible trend that relational databases like Oracle are no longer viable for building the high-performance, flexible and scalable applications that businesses demand. The DB-Engines ranking incorporates all the key indicators, and reflects MongoDB–s pervasive adoption and growing momentum.”
DB-Engines determines its composite based on a number of factors, including traffic on search engines like Google, frequency of technical discussions about the system, social media activity, profiles on professional networks, and job search activity to present a complete view of the influence of each technology.
Today–s news comes on the heels of MongoDB being named Database Management System of the Year by DB-Engines, the second consecutive year the database was named the . MongoDB beat out traditional systems such as Oracle, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
According to a January 7, 2015 DB-Engines blog post by Paul Andlinger and Matthias Gelbmann:
“MongoDB has been the most popular NoSQL system since we started our ranking more than two years ago. It has gained an impressive degree of reputation and popularity, so that many people start here when looking for alternative, non-relational systems. MongoDB has managed to create the feature set, stability and infrastructure ecosystem that satisfies the requirements of many use cases, so that often people see no need to look any further once they have acquainted themselves with MongoDB.”
The world–s fastest growing database, MongoDB has a thriving global community with more than 9 million downloads of its open-source database, 2,000 customers, 750 partners, 250,000 MongoDB University students, 35,000 MongoDB user group (MUG) members and 30,000 MongoDB Days attendees.
