AUSTIN, TX — (Marketwired) — 01/15/15 — Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW), a global leader in flywheel energy and power technology for mission critical applications, today announced deployment of its High Density Flywheel UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems at University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands, one of the largest medical centers in the country. The systems were sold by Pon Power, the authorized Caterpillar dealer in the Netherlands.
The two Cat UPS 625 kVA rated systems condition utility power and deliver critical backup power on demand to the hospital–s new data center. The data center supports both the university and Academic Hospital Groningen at UMCG, one of the country–s leading teaching hospitals with more than 4,000 medical students. Located in the north of the Netherlands, the campus is made up of more than 11,000 employees.
“High Density Flywheel UPS technology provides a large system building block in a small footprint enabling us to dedicate more floor space to server equipment as opposed to physical infrastructure,” said Harmannus Smit, technical consultant, at UMCG. “Its power density coupled with a low total cost of ownership made the UPS an ideal fit based on our design requirements.”
“Total cost of ownership was a key driver in the design of the data center–s electrical infrastructure,” said Rob Kopmels, critical power account manager, for Pon Power. “High Density Flywheel UPS delivers improved operating efficiencies, reduced cooling expenses, and avoids recurring battery replacement costs which contribute to a lower total cost of ownership versus an equivalent legacy UPS.”
