LAS VEGAS, NV — (Marketwired) — 01/06/15 — The Internet of Things has entered the backyard. This week at the 2015 International CES, the way we water our yards will be forever changed, thanks to a new smart watering system from . Blossom is a first-of-its-kind smart sprinkler system that conserves water, significantly reduces water utility bills and gives users control from their smart phone, tablet or computer — extending the benefits of an automated home to the yard. Blossom will be publically shown for the first time at ShowStoppers at CES 2015, one of the consumer electronics industry–s largest international media events.
Three key trends are fueling the market for Blossom: the growing number of IoT devices; the increasing number of homes that are becoming connected and smart; and a rising consumer sentiment to do the right thing by the environment. Blossom–s time is now. Proof positive is Blossom–s enormously successful launch on Kickstarter: the Blossom campaign concluded in mid-December with over $100,000 pledged — more than triple the goal of $30,000. Blossom will begin shipping later this month.
Blossom leverages the QCA7000, a product of Qualcomm Atheros Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, which uses HomePlug Green PHY powerline technology to connect over the home–s existing electrical system. Blossom works with an existing sprinkler system–s wires, valves and sprinklers, making the installation process simple and providing a highly-reliable connection with an essentially limitless range. Wi-Fi is also provided as an alternative connection. Designed to withstand the elements, Blossom–s enclosure has an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 54 and is the only sprinkler controller that is built to be deployed indoors or outdoors.
“The Blossom smart watering system is a great example of how innovators are using Qualcomm Atheros HomePlug Green PHY connectivity to solve ordinary problems in new ways,” noted Joseph Bousaba, senior director of product management, Qualcomm Atheros. “Blossom has proven that simple, reliable and powerful connectivity — achieved using Powerline both outdoors and indoors — delivers a great user experience.”
Using automated weather intelligence, Blossom employs the power of cloud computing to determine an optimal irrigation schedule. By taking into account rainfall and only using the amount of water needed based on weather conditions, Blossom puts an end to wasteful irrigation practices. This also contributes to Blossom being cost-effective. Priced at $199 — it can pay for itself in water cost savings in less than one year and is comparably priced to a conventional outdoor 12-station sprinkler controller. Once installed, Blossom can reduce water utility bills by up to 30 percent.
Blossom is the brainchild of executives that have leveraged their experiences at companies including Skype, Vizio, Microsoft and Cisco to fill a void in the consumer arena. Blossom is the first indoor/outdoor weather-based irrigation controller designed for the residential market.
Consumers can purchase a Blossom on the company–s website. Early-bird pricing of $149 and free shipping are available for orders placed by January 31. Initial shipments will commence later this month. Visit for all of the details.
Headquartered in Irvine, California, the team behind Blossom has created a smart water controller that cuts utility bills and saves water. Blossom uses the power of cloud computing and real time weather data to optimize the irrigation schedule used to manage existing sprinklers. Blossom also gives users easy access to control the watering of their garden from their smart phone, tablet or computer. With 75 prior patent filings between them, and backing from companies such as Vizio and Accton, Blossom–s founders are on a mission to leverage their experience in consumer electronics, water resources, networking and hardware to deliver products that make a difference.
