MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — (Marketwire) — 07/20/11 — Confirming its forecast for revenue growth in the communications semiconductor market, The Linley Group today released the “Communications Semiconductor Market Share Report 2010” which shows market revenues reached $7.7 billion in 2010. This represents a 22 percent increase over 2009 and is in line with the analyst firm-s forecast of 23 percent growth published last year. In this sixth edition of the report, The Linley Group provides market share data for more than 20 product categories, and also includes in-depth text analysis of the data.
“As predicted in our report last year, we are rising off of a steep decline in 2009 and entering a phase of slow, but steady growth,” said Joseph Byrne, senior analyst of The Linley Group. “In trademark fashion, our report combines in-depth analysis of both the companies and products driving the communications semiconductor market. It is a must-have for chip vendors, investors and OEMs who must understand company rankings, market maturity and emerging growth categories.”
According to the report, the economic downturn flushed out struggling companies, and greatly benefited the market-s top supplier, Broadcom. With a 31 percent share of the market, Broadcom continued to invest heavily in both developing and acquiring key technologies. Meanwhile, Intel moved ahead of Lantiq (formerly Infineon) and Marvell to become the second-ranked supplier. Intel saw strong growth in 10 Gigabit and Gigabit Ethernet end points, and also increased its share through the acquisition of the Texas Instruments cable modem business.
The embedded processor market also showed strong signs of growth, posting record revenue of $3.57 billion in 2010. Dominated by heavyweight Intel, the market was up 31 percent over 2009. Freescale ranks second behind Intel, while Cavium and NetLogic grew the fastest. Markets to watch include home networking, OTN and FPGAs for communications.
The Communications Semiconductor Market Share Report is published annually and includes share reports and analysis for 20 categories of communications semiconductor products. Semiconductor products covered include network processors, Gigabit Ethernet components, DSL and PON transceivers, security processors and transport ICs, including OTN. The report also includes market share for switch fabric and interconnect chips, as well as high-end embedded processors. Among the suppliers covered are established players — Broadcom, Freescale, Lantiq, LSI, NetLogic and Realtek — and young companies such as Cortina and Entropic.
