TORONTO, ONTARIO — (Marketwired) — 12/22/14 — (TSX: T)(NYSE: TU) – TELUS is contributing $5 million over five years to support organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, Tree Canada, as well as local SPCAs, humane societies and hundreds of other organizations who protect our environment and support animals and their habitats in Canada. To celebrate, we are asking Canadians to commit –Good Deeds for Wild Things– and shop online to spend $500,000 of the $5 million committed by TELUS to support the needs and habitats of animals in our community like a new beach for turtles or additional tundra for polar bears.
The need to support wildlife and the environment has never been greater than it is today. In fact, the World Wildlife Fund–s (WWF) shows that there has been a 52 per cent decline in world animal species populations since 1970 and the WWF is calling for immediate action to help protect animal habitats.
With 16 causes to choose from, Canadians can help TELUS support the following Canadian animals: moose, grizzly bear, Canada lynx, short-eared owl, burrowing owl, monarch butterfly, bobcat, river otter, salmon, polar bear, ivory gull, painted turtle, loon, beluga whale and mountain caribou. Canadians can also support the planting of new trees to support animal habitats. Support for one of Canada–s national icons, the polar bear, has been the stand-out favourite, netting 17 per cent of total donations. The Canadian Lynx is in second place at 10 per cent with the Moose in third place receiving five per cent of the total support so far.
The campaign launched on Dec. 5, 2014 and has proven very popular. In the first five days, more than 19,000 people committed –Good Deeds for Wild Things– by logging on to , clicking the “Shop now” button and choosing the animal or environmental cause they want to support. Everyone is invited to participate and no purchase is required; just #ShopWildly for your favourite critter cause. Word has been spreading in social media through the #ShopWildly hashtag and TELUS is urging all animal and nature lovers out there to join the movement to support Canadian wildlife this holiday season.
“Our –Give Where We Live– philosophy includes protecting animals and their habitats, which is why we are supporting Canadian wildlife by committing $5 million over five years toward very worthy animal-related causes,” said Jill Schnarr, vice president, Community Affairs at TELUS. “We believe that helping protect Canadian wildlife today is key to ensuring healthy, sustainable communities for all of us in the future, and we–re giving Canadians the power to decide where this money goes through Good Deeds for Wild Things.”
This funding is being distributed to each cause through our partners WWF, The Nature Conservancy of Canada and Tree Canada.
