MENLO PARK, CA — (Marketwired) — 12/17/14 — , the leader in employee communications and engagement, announced today the results of its latest research on employee participation in . This extensive study explores what employees are looking for in wellness programs and what employers can do to maximize participation.
“As companies increase their investment in expansive wellness programs designed to improve company performance and employee engagement and retention, participation among employees continues to lag,” said Keith Kitani, GuideSpark CEO. “Our research explores this paradox in-depth, uncovering the reasons why employees fail to take advantage of these programs and what employers can do to offer more relevant wellness initiatives and incentives that drive participation.”
Overall, the study, based on survey responses of more than 350 individuals from companies of at least 1,000 employees, found a large disconnect between the perceived importance of and participation in wellness programs. While 70 percent of respondents said that wellness is valuable, a mere nine percent take full advantage of the wellness programs offered by their companies. According to GuideSpark–s findings, the main reasons for this lack of participation include employees being too busy with their jobs, the programs do not fit their lifestyle or employees are not fully aware of the various programs their companies offer.
To drive participation, it is critical to understand what employees want in their wellness programs. For instance, the study found that the majority of participants rated programs related to stress management (86 percent), physical fitness (85 percent) and financial wellness (82 percent) among those most important. In addition, 66 percent said that incentives are very important to motivate participation in wellness programs, and 63 percent reported that they would participate more if the programs were better suited to their lifestyle.
The findings emphasize the need to communicate and educate employees on the wellness programs available to them, and to offer incentives that motivate them to participate.
