BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS — (Marketwired) — 12/02/14 — Columbus International Inc. (Columbus), one of the largest telecommunications service providers in the Caribbean, announced today that its subsidiary Columbus Networks in a joint venture with Cable & Wireless has been awarded for the second year in a row “Best Caribbean Wholesale Carrier” at the 2014 Global Carrier Awards.
Over the past 10 years, the Global Carrier Awards have become the biggest and most prestigious awards event in the wholesale telecoms calendar. This year–s event attracted more than 330 attendees.
A record number of over 160 entries were submitted for this year–s awards. The winners were decided by a panel of more than 20 judges, which included leading analysts, industry experts and Capacity–s senior editorial team. They were aided by a new scoring system, which was refined for 2014 to ensure that the shortlisting and winners decisions remained objective and transparent.
“We are extremely honored to be recognized as the Best Caribbean Wholesale Carrier for a second time. This recognition emphasizes the hard work and dedication of our team and their unwavering commitment to better serve our carrier clients and their customers through our continuous investment and improvement in broadband infrastructure connectivity throughout the region,” said Brendan Paddick, ceo of Columbus group. “We are proud of what we have built and are even more proud that we have created such unmatched opportunities for progress in the region.”
In selecting Columbus Networks as the winner, the judges noted that the company operates the largest subsea networks in the pan-Caribbean region, serving over 260 local, regional and international carriers. Its diverse IP backbone, along with its over 38,000 in-country fiber backhaul and local terrestrial networks that are continually expanding throughout the region were also key factors that impressed the selection committee. In 2014, Columbus also began construction of a metropolitan fiber-optic network in the Peruvian capital of Lima. In addition, the selection committee noted the beneficial impact to the region from Columbus– successful subsea joint venture with Cable & Wireless that has enabled unmatched scale and reach spanning some 42,000 km of subsea network and 42 countries.
This year, judges utilized a new scoring system designed to ensure that shortlisting remained objective and transparent. Alex Hawkes, editor of Capacity Magazine, and who served as a judge, stated, “Columbus Networks plays a pivotal role in the Caribbean telecom market. It operates one of the largest networks in the region and has continued to bring connectivity to new markets.”
The 2014 Global Carrier Awards attracted more entries and higher profile attendance than ever before, with more than 350 of the most influential industry executives congregating at the Hotel Okura in Amsterdam in November. For additional information visit
