Incapsula Finds DDoS Attacks Cost Businesses an Average of $500,000

REDWOOD SHORES, CA — (Marketwired) — 11/12/14 — , the cloud-based website security and performance service, today released its . Based on a survey of 270 North American companies, the report found that 45 percent of the companies surveyed have been hit by a DDoS attack, with the average DDoS attack costing businesses half a million dollars.

While the majority of DDoS attacks tend to be brief — 86 percent of attacks last for less than a day, and 68 percent last for less than 13 hours — they have the potential to cause significant damage. The estimated cost of an attack is $40,000 per hour. However, the costs of these attacks are not just financial; 87 percent of respondents that have experienced an attack have suffered at least one non-financial consequence:

52 percent had to reconfigure hardware or software

50 percent had a virus or malware installed or activated

43 percent experienced loss of consumer trust

33 percent experienced customer data theft

19 percent experienced loss of intellectual property

“We believe that with the costs for attackers decreasing and costs for businesses increasing, DDoS targets have broadened from financial institutions and government sites to any company that depends on its online channels, like online retailers and SaaS vendors,” said Marc Gaffan, CEO of Incapsula, an Imperva company. “With ransom requests as low as a few hundred dollars yielding positive returns for attackers, even small technology start-ups are being targeted and taken down.”
