SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwired) — 11/11/14 — (NYSE: AMD) today announced the AMD Embedded G-Series System-on-Chip (SoC) is powering the new Gizmo 2 development board from , a nonprofit development board community. Gizmo 2 is a second-generation, open source development board, offering embedded programmers and advanced DIYers outstanding compute and graphics performance on a single platform for a wide range of Linux and Windows based development projects.
“The AMD Embedded SoC processor combines a powerful and efficient CPU and GPU on a single chip, making Gizmo 2 ideal for both DIYers and professionals looking to go beyond the entry-level performance available with most of today–s DIY boards,” said Kamal Khouri, director of marketing, AMD Embedded Solutions. “Gizmo 2 offers cutting-edge compute performance and exceptional graphics processing, enabling the exploration of new ideas in science and technology, while encouraging innovation around multicore heterogeneous computing.”
Based on the AMD GX-210HA dual-core processor, Gizmo 2 is more powerful than its predecessor, coupling a 1.0 GHz CPU and 300 MHz GPU while only drawing 9 watts TDP on a compact, 4-inch by 4-inch board. Gizmo 2 is one of the highest performing development boards available with 85 GFLOPS performance, ideal for those looking to supplement or replace entry-level platforms. Founded on an open source, community-based ecosystem, Gizmo 2 hardware schematics, Gerber format files and bill-of-materials (BOM) will be open-sourced to the GizmoSphere and Element14 community for those looking to design and build a custom board.
Features of the Gizmo 2 board include:
HDMI video/audio output
1 GB DDR3-1600 memory
HD audio in/out
mSATA/mini PCIe Connector
microSD card slot
Onboard Gigabit Ethernet
USB 3 (2) and 2 (2) connectors
Support for DirectX® 11.1, OpenGL 4.2x and OpenCL 1.2, enabling parallel processing
Error-Correction Code (ECC) memory support
The board is available worldwide for $199 (USD) through and the community. GizmoSphere provides community forums for developers to find and share information on Gizmo 2, plus examples and tips on development projects. To learn more about GizmoSphere, or to purchase a Gizmo 2 board, please visit .
