SAN FRANCISCO, CA and DUSSELDORF, GERMANY — (Marketwired) — 10/15/14 — (SDN & OPENFLOW WORLD CONGRESS) — The , a community-led and industry-supported open source platform to advance Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), today announced that Dell, one of the project–s founding members, is upgrading its membership to Platinum. Dell joins existing OpenDaylight members at this highest level of membership including Brocade, Cisco, Citrix, Ericsson, HP, IBM, Juniper, Microsoft and Red Hat to accelerate the creation and adoption of an open SDN and NFV platform for users of any size and scale.
The OpenDaylight community recently made available its second software release called , which has evolved to a more deeply integrated and robust SDN and NFV platform that allows users to build on-demand combinations of components and features to customize their solutions. It comes at a critical juncture as the networking industry is embracing open source as the right path to achieving interoperability and innovation.
Dell–s vision for the new data center networking model is an ecosystem based on openness and interoperability that allows customers to choose the best hardware and software to meet their needs. The company has made investments throughout the entire IT stack to achieve a disaggregated model with OpenDaylight playing a key role in SDN orchestration.
“It–s important that we can give customers the choice of finding the right solution for their needs,” said Arpit Joshipura, vice president of product management and strategy, Dell Networking. “From the hardware to software and operating systems, we have made our ecosystem open and interoperable to help anyone achieve the vision of the software-defined data center. We–ve chosen OpenDaylight as our primary orchestration platform for creating enterprise-ready SDN solutions and fulfilling the promise of SDN to our customers.”
“We are seeing major shifts in the industry toward greater virtualization of every element of IT. Dell was one of the few early supporters of virtualization and has continued to be at the forefront of bridging open hardware and software for its customers,” said Neela Jacques, executive director, OpenDaylight. “Their increased investment in OpenDaylight is another sign that the industry is converging around open SDN and NFV as the right path toward innovation and adoption.”
Subi Krishnamurthy, executive director, CTO, Dell Networking, will join OpenDaylight–s board of directors, and Mohnish Anumala, technologist distinguished engineer, Dell, will join OpenDaylight–s Technical Steering Committee. As part of its Platinum membership, Dell is dedicating additional employee resources to OpenDaylight to help advance the platform as it evolves into a production-ready SDN and NFV solution.
The OpenDaylight Project is a collaborative open source project that aims to accelerate adoption of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and create a solid foundation for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) for a more transparent approach that fosters new innovation and reduces risk. Founded by industry leaders and open to all, the OpenDaylight community is developing a common, open SDN framework consisting of code and blueprints. Get involved: .
