According to the , French employees spend 1,476 hours a year at work. However, 32 percent of French employees report that their jobs are below their expectations set during the interview process, according to a recent study by Harris Interactive[1] commissioned by Glassdoor. Given all the time employees spend at work and away from family and friends, landing a job that is different than what one expected can be a costly mistake.
Founded in 2007, Glassdoor now has more than 26 million members, offering anonymous insights into more than 325,000 companies in 190 countries. As of today, Glassdoor offers French job seekers well over 100,000 job listings and first-hand insights into more than 3,000 employers in France, including leading employers such as , and .
Glassdoor is free, but maintains an effective “give-to-get” model, providing all access to Glassdoor data once a user contributes a review, office photo or salary report for their current employer or any position they have held within the last five years. Glassdoor not only offers job seekers free access to the latest job listings, but what sets the community apart are the anonymous insights from current and former employees about what it is really like to work at a particular company. Highlights of specific features are outlined below:
Through , employees offer an inside look at the pros and cons of working at their company as well as any advice they would give to senior management. Employees are also asked to rate their satisfaction with the company overall, key workplace factors (e.g., compensation and benefits, work-life balance and career advancement), whether they approve or disapprove of the way the CEO is leading the company, and give their take on whether they think the company–s business outlook will get better, stay the same or get worse in the next six months.
For example, according to French employees, receives a 3.2 rating (ratings are based on a five-point scale: 1.0=very dissatisfied, 5.0=very satisfied) and CEO Jean-Laurent Bonnafe earns a 70 percent approval rating (30 percent disapproval). For comparison, a job seeker can compare BNP Paribas to which receives a 3.1 rating from employees and CEO Frédéric Oudéa receives a 74 percent approval rating (26 percent disapproval). , meanwhile, has a 3.3 company rating and CEO Thomas Enders earns an 86 percent approval rating, 14 percent disapproval.
: Employees share details on pay, whether it is an annual salary or hourly compensation system, for a specific job title at a certain company. The provide insights into other forms of compensation including commissions, cash and stock bonuses and profit sharing. For example, an in France reportedly earns an average salary of EUR 50,100 and bonus of EUR 3,375, whereas an in France earns an average salary of EUR 46,012 and a bonus of EUR 2,700.
Recent job candidates offer details about the interview process and their initial perception of the company culture and people. Candidates are also encouraged to share difficult or unexpected interview questions and rate the overall interview experience as well as its difficulty. Other details included in the include the interview format, duration and outcome, and how the candidate secured the interview.
Employees can also share which shed light on what benefits and perks, such as healthcare and vacation/paid time off, employers offer and what they think about the package overall. These reviews make it easier to compare benefits packages and perks, allowing job seekers to better understand which company is the right fit based on their specific needs.
: Employees and employers can share office photos giving an actual look at the work environment. In turn, job seekers can see if employees sit in offices or in an open area and can see shared office spaces such as the office lobby, kitchen and eating areas. For instance, has photos of employees enjoying its light and airy campus in Paris and has photos showing off its sleek, modern office in Grenoble.

While a member–s identity is never revealed to the Glassdoor community, the company requires a verifiable email address or Facebook or Google+ log in, in order to register and submit a review. Before being posted to the community, every review is read by a Glassdoor team member to ensure the content adheres to and does not compromise anonymity. Once a submission is received, users may immediately access data for all companies. However, the company estimates the process for reviewing submissions can take between a few hours to a couple of business days.

Employers can also get involved in the Glassdoor community by signing up for a . Official company representatives can use the account to access their employer center, which allows them to provide and update basic company profile information (e.g., company description, mission statement, headquarter location, CEO name and more). The employer center also offers analytics on company awareness among job seekers and data on brand performance. Specifically, employers can see how many job seekers are viewing their profile on Glassdoor each month, the competitor companies candidates are also viewing, and a variety of job seeker demographics like location, age and job title. In addition, employers can see how their company and CEO approval ratings trend over time.
Another benefit of the employer account is it allows an official company representative to publicly respond to reviews contributed by employees or job seekers.
