TMV Control Systems Enable Locomotive Fleets to Run More Efficiently With Opengear-s Cellular Remote Management

SANDY, UT — (Marketwired) — 11/25/13 — Opengear (), a leading provider of critical infrastructure management solutions through , , , and , today announced that locomotive systems designer and manufacturer has installed Opengear-s remote management gateways to provide 3G cellular connectivity for instant engine data reporting to its locomotive monitoring systems.

TMV Control Systems has outfitted its primary product, the Traction and Engine Control Unit (TECU), with Opengear-s remote management gateway. The TECU, which gives TMV Control Systems- rail customers health and location data for their fleet, will now have 24/7 remote monitoring for engine systems via 3G wireless connectivity, GPS capabilities, and VPN gateway. The integration of the ACM5004-G-I with TECU allows for critical data to be securely transmitted even while locomotives are in transit. The ACM5004-G-I provides immediate access to the data that is critical for timely maintenance from operational staff. Data that previously could only be downloaded in the physical presence of the locomotive can now be retrieved at anytime and from anywhere, enabling remote engine issue diagnosis and problem resolution.

“Data that used to take hours to collect is now automatically retrieved every few minutes,” said Isaac Sutherland, software developer, TMV Control Systems. “Health supervisors, equipment owners, and maintenance staff now have online access to data that is just minutes old. Problems can be identified and analyzed as they occur so that remote support staff can provide timely solutions. We at TMV Control Systems appreciate the secure and convenient remote connectivity that Opengear adds to our projects.”

TMV Control Systems- integration of Opengear equipment with TECU has both improved operational efficiency and reduced downtime. Diagnostics no longer require technicians be sent to a locomotive when a problem arises. The ACM5004 makes off-site diagnostics and data analysis easy and reduces hassle considerably.

Using the ACM5004-G-I, data can be delivered to anyone regardless of their location. Fault logs are automatically generated reports keeping staff up-to-date on the health of all equipment. Because real-time monitoring can call attention to problems as they happen, support staff is able to begin diagnosis and remediation before operators even report the issue.

“Modern locomotives are large, complex pieces of mobile technology. The remote network capabilities of our products with cellular support are especially useful for monitoring such remote-traveling, moving equipment,” said Todd Rychecky, vice president of sales, Opengear. “We-re glad that our products can help support TMV Control Systems- hard work to improve the difficult task of transportation monitoring, from cutting edge, multi-engine locomotives to street cars.”
