Fold3-s “The Honor Wall” Helps Americans Remember and Pay Respect to Veterans

PROVO, UT — (Marketwired) — 11/11/13 — Fold3, the U.S. military record specialist in the Ancestry.com family of brands, today released The Honor Wall (), an online memorial for the many millions of men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces over the past 200+ years. Family, friends and loved ones will be able to pay homage to their heroes this Veterans Day and beyond, by accessing military records from the Revolutionary War to present day to develop a special page that brings their hero to life through historical military records, stories and photos.

“After many months of hard work, we are thrilled to roll The Honor Wall live just in time for Veterans Day,” said Brian Hansen, General Manager of Fold3.com. “On this week when many folks are thinking about those who served on their behalf, we encourage them to take the extra step to build and expand The Honor Wall pages for those heroes.”

Currently The Honor Wall pages have data sourced from records spanning more than 200 years of U.S. military history, detailed on over 20 million personalized online pages already created. The unique virtual memorial will continue to grow and evolve as new pages are contributed by visitors to The Honor Wall, and those already existing are supplemented by additional user content.

The Honor Wall will also serve as a source of education on the lives of U.S. men and women in conflicts and in times of peace, whether serving at home or abroad. This is done via historical records already populated on many of The Honor Wall pages from the National Archives and Record Administration, Fold3, Ancestry.com and TogetherWeServed.com, an online community for connecting veterans.

More than one million searches for military records are made on Fold3 every month, emphasizing the interest and importance of preserving military stories. Unlike a physical memorial, The Honor Wall inspires an even more collaborative experience to learn more about the heroes in your family tree, and give families and friends an easy way to pay tribute and preserve and share their legacies for future generations.

To date more than 20 million honor pages are online, including two by Larry Oakley, a Vietnam veteran who created a page not only for himself, but also a second for his father, Billy, who served in World War II.

“The Honor Wall has been a fun and easy place for me to post images, memories and details about my own time in the service, and more importantly for my father, who served in WWII and inspired me to take on a life of aeronautics,” said Mr. Oakley. “It is great I can share these images and memories online with my friends from Vietnam, who I still meet with regularly.”

It is free to create pages and contribute material to The Honor Wall. To create a rich, visually compelling, lasting history that can be shared proudly with friends and family, Fold3 recommends the following tips:

Reach out to the veterans in your life who can provide anecdotes about their time in the service.

Take pictures of photos and mementoes with your smartphone and use an app such as Shoebox by Ancestry.com to upload to The Honor Wall and encourage their preservation.

Research your hero-s military history on sites like Fold3 and Ancestry.com, and attach historical records to their page on The Honor Wall.
