The DBSM-controlled broadband service switch exploits the capabilities of software-defined networking to gain full visibility into and direct control over subscriber traffic flows at the broadband edge, allowing operators to grow revenue with highly dynamic, on-demand services, protect revenue by aligning pricing with bandwidth consumption and improve subscriber quality of experience by managing network utilization.

The broadband service switch is controlled using the OpenFlow protocol and generates network stream telemetry data using IPFIX, a highly efficient and extensible IETF protocol that represents the state of the art in IP network telemetry. Active Broadband-s DBSM uses OpenFlow to dynamically activate services and directly implement service management policies for fine-grained control of subscriber traffic flows. The DBSM incorporates IPFIX for rapidly collecting telemetry data on traffic flows for real-time service management applications that require timely and accurate information about bandwidth consumption and network conditions.
