Business Consulting firm Frankfurt Partners (www.frankfurtpartners.com) is predicting that there will be a major Consolidation in the industrial MEMS market. The Marker is highly attractive and at the same time very fragmented.
What is MEMS? MEMS stands for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems. MEMS are tiny mechanical devices that are built onto semiconductor chips and are measured in micrometers. They are used to make pressure, temperature, chemical and vibration sensors, light reflectors, image sensing devices and switches as well as accelerometers for airbags, vehicle control, pacemakers and games applications.
The overall MEMS Market is a rapidly growing market with double digit growth rates. The total MEMS market size was about $8 billion in 2010, up more than 12% from last year. By 2015, it will surpass $16.5 billion which is CAGR of 15.9%.
Consumer demand is driving the overall Market increase, however high value MEMS technology (with higher margins), are finding an increased presence in the other key market segments, like the Automotive, Defense, Industrial and Medical markets.
“The Industrial MEMS market is highly fragmented, with literally hundreds of different companies in various market segments,” said Rene Meister, Managing Director of Frankfurt Partners. No company has more than 10% Market share and the Top 10 companies are focusing mainly on the consumer market with the exception of Bosch. The majority of industrial focused companies have less than 1% market share.
“The Industrial MEMS industry is very close to a tipping point,” according to Rene Meister. “Applications that are driving the demand for MEMS devices are growing rapidly. In the next 12 to 18 month we expect to see major consolidations especially in Europe. So far there has been some cross-industry consolidation, mostly by semiconductor companies which are acquiring emerging companies with key technologies or with a strong patent portfolio.”
