iGR Releases New HetNet Bandwidth Demand Model

AUSTIN, TX — (Marketwired) — 10/09/13 — Wireless heterogeneous networks, or HetNets, combine multiple types of access nodes in a wireless network, including macrocells, picocells, femtocells, and WiFi, and also provide seamless connection and handoff between these different access nodes. Conceptually, using hetnets means aligning network resources — whatever they are — with the demand in a given geographic area.

Because mobile consumers move within the network throughout their day and also move from one device to another, determining the bandwidth demand of a HetNet environment is much more complex than that of a macrocell environment.

iGR-s new HetNet Bandwidth Demand Model shows the usage in each of the five components of a HetNet: Home WiFi, Mobile Broadband, User Driven WiFi Offload, Carrier Driven WiFi Offload, and WiFi Only devices. The model uses four inputs: the population of the market to be modeled, the number of households, the type of market to be modeled (urban, metropolitan, rural, or national), and if WiFi Offload should be included.

The results of the model, forecasted from 2012 to 2017, include the total bandwidth consumed in gigabytes per month, the number of users, and the usage by time of day for each component of the HetNet. Because not all users and households use the same amount of data, the total results are further categorized by user and household profiles: light, medium, heavy, and extreme.

iGR has created two versions of the HetNet Bandwidth Demand Model. A full version, as described above, is available to subscription clients or for individual purchase, and a simplified version that does not include the input of WiFi Offload, the results categorized for each user profile, or the results forecasted through 2017 is available FREE. The free version allows users to try the model and get a general sense of its functionality.

“We hope the free model can be used to give a snapshot of what is happening in a particular market,” said Iain Gillott, president and founder of iGR, a market research consultancy focused on the wireless and mobile industry. “The full version of the model will allow more in depth analysis and comparisons of different types of users.”

The information provided by the model will be valuable for:

Mobile operators

WiFi service providers

Infrastructure vendors

Small Cell and DAS Infrastructure vendors

Tower companies

Financial analysts and investors.

Both versions of iGR-s new HetNet Bandwidth Demand Model can be purchased and/or downloaded directly from iGR-s website at Alternatively, contact Iain Gillott at (512) 263-5682 or at for additional details.
