SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 10/01/13 — Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the application performance company, today announced W3 Ltd., the company behind the classified ad sites Vivastreet and Easy Roommate, is deploying the Riverbed® Stingray application delivery controller (ADC). Stingray, a software ADC designed to make applications faster, more reliable, and more secure in the cloud or data center, helps W3 ensure optimal site performance and reliability to support the roughly 20 million page views per day from two to three million users viewing its classified ads.
7 reasons why your application is failing to meet user and business expectations:
W3 operates sites in 19 countries and is behind Vivastreet.co.uk, the ninth largest classified site in the world. The company has expanded to Latin America and operates Vivanuncios.com.mx, now the largest online classified ad site in Mexico.

Promoting classified services content, W3 sites are continuously updated with user-generated content. Ben Block, chief technology officer of DM Services, a U.S.-based services company under contract with W3, manages Vivastreet-s data from a New York City data center. To ensure optimal site performance and reliability, Block wanted load-balancing functionality as a part of the Vivastreet platform. A big proponent of open source software, Block-s team originally deployed HA Proxy load balancing for TCP and HTTP-based applications.
“It-s simple round robin load balancing, so it didn-t have some of the functionality we needed,” said Block. “Also, scripting was fairly complicated, so we weren-t doing as much of that as we wanted to do.”
After deploying HA Proxy load balancing for TCP and HTTP-based applications and not receiving the functionality needed, a member of Block-s team suggested Stingray Traffic Manager from Riverbed as an alternative.
“When engineers pull up a live page, they don-t want to cache that page with the debugger information in it, so we-ve written a rule that if the debugger cookie is present we bypass the cache,” said Block. “That sort of thing is very easy to do with Stingray TrafficScript.”
“We haven-t had any outages since we started using Stingray,” said Block. “Stingray is easy to configure, easy to set up, and easy to script. Also, it has been helpful that Stingray offers so many different ways to load balance these traffic requests. Stingray is the only commercial software in the stack at Vivastreet, and the ADC ensures the performance and reliability of our online operations, which means optimal service for our customers.”
Stingray supports Block-s move toward the DevOps model of collaboration between IT and software development groups. According to Block, Stingray-s ease of scripting and ability to take on tasks has simplified the work of the DevOps team and saved them a significant amount of time. The Stingray software ADC is designed for organizations using agile development methods and seeking ways to optimize their DevOps to achieve better and faster real-world application results in real time. The Stingray TrafficScript programming language helps DevOps teams create application deployment policies that are specific to their applications.
“Stingray has given the administrators a really powerful tool,” added Block. “They don-t need to worry about what the development team is doing, such as setting headers, or what kinds of cookies are coming in and coming out. They can control things at their level with the Stingray scripting capability.”
