LEIPZIG, GERMANY – (HealthTech Wire / News) – HIMSS Analytics Europe has announced that it will award a German and two Spanish hospitals the Stage 6 EMRAM Award during European eHealth Week in Budapest (10-12 May 2011). The Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) is a method of scoring hospitals in eight stages (0-7) of adopting electronic medical records, ranging from limited departmental systems through to a paperless medical record environment. The Awards will be presented during a dinner ceremony on Tuesday 10 May at 20.30.
“Being a Stage 6 hospital is an important indicator of high quality patient care with an interoperable electronic medical record in place. The healthcare system is currently plagued by a shortage of personnel and financial resources. Therefore, transparency with regard to cost and quality of patient care becomes more and more important. Our goal is to continuously improve information logistics with a focus on paperless clinical pathways”, emphasizes Uwe Buddrus, managing director of HIMSS Analytics Europe.
This is the second EMRAM award ceremony recognising outstanding achievements by European hospitals since the model was introduced in Europe last year. The first ceremony took place at the HIMSS Europe Health IT Leadership Summit in Rome last September. Three hospitals from across Europe won the Stage 6 Award: University Hospitals of Geneva, the largest public hospital consortium in Switzerland; Odense University Hospital, Denmark, one of the largest hospitals in northern Europe; and ISMETT Hospital in Sicily, one of the leading organ transplant centres in Europe.
Stage 6 is the second highest level achievable and represents an advanced stage of implementation. It includes closed loop medication administration and a full complement of PACS, as well as clinical decision support capabilities providing guidance for all clinicians related to protocols and outcomes in the form of variance and compliance alerts. HIMSS Analytics Europe has developed HIMSS Analytics- highly respected US EMR Adoption Model for the European Market. Data for EMRAM is collected from hospital CIOs, senior executives and clinicians throughout Europe on an annual basis. The data collected relates to IT processes and environments, products, IT department composition and costs, IT department management metrics, healthcare delivery trends and purchase-related decisions.
“EMRAM allows us to identify best practice scenarios for all types of acute hospitals. For example, instead of only looking at well-known, leading healthcare facilities, a medium-sized facility providing general acute care can look at comparable facilities. The progress of leading hospitals with regard to IT implementation can be publicly recognized”, says Buddrus.
HIMSS Analytics Europe”s offerings include comparative hospital IT adoption benchmarking and a European-formulated EMRAM scale to help hospital executives and clinicians compare and measure their progress in the adoption and use of healthcare information technology.
On the first day of eHealth Week, HIMSS Analytics Europe will host the Leaders in Health IT (LHIT) Symposium, which is an all-day meeting of Europe”s Health-IT elite. The event will feature four educational panel sessions, intensive knowledge exchange and exclusive networking opportunities at the most senior level. The LHIT forum will run in parallel with the Hungarian Presidency”s and the European Commission-s Ministerial eHealth Conference 2011 – and delegates will join the Ministerial delegates in the evening for the opening reception.
