NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwired) — 08/14/13 — , one of the world-s most popular open source content management systems (CMS) used for everything from websites to blogs to Intranets, today announced that students participating in the and will be submitting new features for possible inclusion in the September release of Joomla 3.2.
Currently, ten students are working on individual projects that will be considered for the upcoming release. They include high-visibility features for the CMS such as an updated template and media manager, and front-end administration. All of the students working on these projects live outside the United States, and are attending universities in India, Italy, Romania, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
“The requirements and landscape for Web and mobile development are constantly changing and it-s important that we work with student developers to capture their global ideas and innovations,” said Paul Orwig, president of Open Source Matters, a non-profit created to provide organization, legal and financial support to the Joomla project. “Google Summer of Code and GNOME Outreach Program for Women represent some of the finest programs available and attract some of the most skilled student developers. We-re excited to give the students an opportunity to shine, to support increased opportunities for women in the technology field, and to let them flex their development muscles for Joomla 3.2 and beyond.”
The Google Summer of Code is a global program that runs until October 1, offering students enrolled in a college or university stipends to write code for open source projects. The GNOME Outreach Program for Women helps women get involved in free and open source software by providing paid, focused internship opportunities, twice a year with a number of free software organizations. This internship ends September 23.
“Joomla-s success is tied to its large network of global contributors and those contributions enable the core product team to deliver a CMS that is used to power more than 3 percent of the Web,” said Elin Waring of the Joomla Production Working Group, who is also co-administering the Google Summer of Code and GNOME Outreach Program for Women projects. “While students have worked to try and develop code for Joomla in the past, this is the first time that multiple projects will be evaluated for the Joomla core right away.”
