SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwired) — 07/24/13 — RGB Networks, the leading provider of scalable multiscreen IP video delivery solutions, today announced that its products have been used by Sweetwater Cable TV, an independent cable operator, to comprehensively upgrade its network to fully digital operation in order to deliver more services.
Sweetwater has served the residents of Wyoming-s Rock Springs and Green River communities since its founding in 1955 when it initially offered just three broadcast channels out of Salt Lake City, Utah. The company has steadily expanded its service offerings and now offers its residential and business customers a comprehensive suite of broadband video, data and voice services, including more than 240 channels of programming. This all-digital upgrade enabled Sweetwater to reclaim a vast amount of bandwidth previously allocated to its analog video service and is now used to deliver new digital services, including HD broadcasts of all local channels offered at no additional cost.
Additional benefits of this upgrade include new revenue from inserting ads for local advertisers. A proven money maker, local ad insertion earned U.S. cable operators more than $4 billion in 2011. Sweetwater has also saved money and streamlined its operations by getting its programming feeds directly from the programmers themselves, rather than through the single source it has traditionally relied on.
To accomplish this upgrade, Sweetwater turned to RGB Networks and deployed several RGB products in its central headend in Rock Springs. These products include the Broadcast Network Processor (BNP) for statistical multiplexing, transrating, grooming and ad splicing, and the Modular Media Converter (MMC) for ASI-to-Gigabit Ethernet conversion.
“We had big goals for this major network upgrade and it was clear to us from the start that RGB Networks had the most proven products to help us achieve these goals,” said Brian Jackson, Chief Engineer for Sweetwater Cable TV. “Installing and configuring the RGB products went smoothly and the technical support has been great. We-ve been particularly impressed with the stability of the products and with the outstanding picture quality.”
“Independents like Sweetwater that are focused on providing their communities with the latest broadband services delivered with the best quality can benefit from RGB-s suite of digital video products, which have been proven in major deployments with the nation-s largest cable operators, as well as smaller, independent operators throughout the US,” said Lou Mastrocola, RGB Networks- Vice President, Global Sales. “Working directly or through our network of reseller partners, we can help operators of all sizes meet their goals, whether it-s to complete a digital upgrade of their network, expand services to deliver TV Everywhere, or generate new ad revenue through ad insertion in either environment.”
