CAMBRIDGE, MA — (Marketwired) — 07/08/13 — , the best choice to secure network access for BYOD, today announced that the Miami Marlins have deployed Network Sentry, its patented (NAC) solution, to provide secure, network access for thousands of IP-enabled devices at Marlins Park as well as game day broadcast crews.
Marlins Park is the spectacular new home of the Miami Marlins baseball team, designed to deliver the best experience today-s networked world offers. Throughout the ballpark, there are thousands of different IP-enabled devices used to run the facility and venue events — including ATMs, televisions and menu boards, LED display boards, point of sale terminals, sound systems, as well as PCs and laptops used by the Marlin-s staff — all of which require secure network access. In addition, hundreds of radio and TV personnel require network access for their devices in order to broadcast the Marlins games.
“Sports venues, by their very nature, are dynamic, multi-use facilities. When designing Marlins Park, one of our key challenges was to figure out how to manage network access across the thousands of Ethernet ports located all over the facility. We needed to automatically provision secure network access for approved devices and users, and enable them to move throughout the facility, while detecting and blocking rogue devices,” said David Enriquez, senior director, information technology, Miami Marlins.
To address these challenges, the Miami Marlins deployed Bradford Networks- , a NAC solution built for (BYOD). Network Sentry automatically detects the thousands of different devices that request network access through more than 7,000 unique ports located across Marlins Park, and automatically enforces pre-defined access policies that are based on device type, function, and the person or organization using it.
“Marlins Park is a network access control challenge on a grand scale. Network Sentry was able to mold itself to handle our specific security concerns and vulnerabilities,” commented Ozzy Macias, network services manager for the Miami Marlins. “With Network Sentry, secure network access is now simply -plug and go-. Our staff, vendors and contractors can now take a device such as a television, menu board, or Point-of-Sale terminal, plug it in, and Network Sentry will immediately recognize it, register it, and automatically put it on its proper VLAN. If the device is moved, it-s automatically reconnected to the appropriate network wherever it-s plugged in. Additionally, television and radio crews can now plug into any of the 500 plus publicly accessible ports around the ballpark and automatically get the network access they need to broadcast the games. Network Sentry makes life much easier for everyone working in the park.”
Network Sentry gives the IT staff at Marlins Park complete visibility and control over network access. It also automatically detects rogue devices attempting to connect to the network, and can shut the port immediately. “I can now see where each device is connected, the type of device, and who it belongs to. Without Network Sentry, we would have no idea where these devices were, or what was connected to our network,” added Macias. “Furthermore, Network Sentry eliminates all the physical running around to cover an event — a task that in the past required three or four IT staff, can now be completed with just one individual.”
With the successful implementation of Network Sentry complete, the Marlins IT team plans on expanding the NAC solution to control the wireless network and provide registration-based access to corporate WiFi users.
“The nature of today-s connected world, where almost every device is IP-enabled and therefore a potential attack vector, organizations like the Miami Marlins must have complete visibility and control of their network,” said Tom Murphy, CMO, Bradford Networks. “The Miami Marlins have completed its state of the art ballpark with an advanced NAC solution that enables them to have one of the most secure, connected parks in baseball. We look forward to working with them in the future, as well as other Major League Baseball teams, who all face similar challenges that can be easily and automatically mitigated with our Network Sentry NAC solution.”
