SAN CARLOS, CA — (Marketwired) — 06/13/13 — MarkLogic Corporation, provider of the enterprise NoSQL (not only SQL) database platform, announced that the Founders Online website, publically launched today by the National Archives and the University of Virginia (U.Va.) Press, uses MarkLogic-s flexible document storage, built-in search engine and web services to offer dynamic access to the papers of six of the most important figures from America-s founding era.
Created through a cooperative agreement between the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) — the grant-making arm of the National Archives — and U.Va. Press, Founders Online is a free online tool that brings together the papers of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison in a single, fully searchable website. The project is the beneficiary of 50 years of scholarly efforts funded by the NHPRC to secure original historical records from key American founders and Congressional direction to expedite public access to these founding documents through online publication.
“U.Va. Press is honored to be working with NHPRC and MarkLogic on Founders Online,” said Mark H. Saunders, Interim Director of the University of Virginia Press. “This resource brings together the papers of six major figures from the founding era in a user-friendly website that gives Americans and people around the world a first-hand account of the historic conversation that formed our democracy and allowed our country to thrive.”
Together, some 175,000 documents are projected to be made available on Founders Online over the next three years — including 55,000 unpublished documents currently being researched and annotated by scholarly editors. As these new documents become available and are converted to XML, MarkLogic-s agile enterprise NoSQL database will easily integrate them into the National Archives data repository for Founders Online and its real-time search capabilities will make the documents available to users of the site immediately.
“MarkLogic has built content systems that can manage billions of data points and automatically filter according to organizational needs,” said Kevin Shelly, vice president, Public Sector, MarkLogic. “We are delighted to be a fundamental part of the Founders Online site, and confident that these capabilities contribute great value to this important tool for learning about our nation-s history.”
