MEQUON, WI — (Marketwired) — 06/11/13 — America has fallen in love with TV time-shifting. Viewers record programs when they air and then watch when it-s convenient — sometimes over two or three viewing sessions.
It turns out that people also love time-shifting when it comes to applying for a mortgage to purchase or refinance a home. An analysis by of more than 650,000 online applications to more than 1,100 U.S. lending institutions during 2012 indicates that technology allows people to apply for mortgages 24/7, and often during work hours. Mortgage Marvel is owned by D+H Mortgagebot, a leading provider of secure and reliable mortgage and consumer lending technology to lending institutions nationwide.
“You might think that people would complete their online mortgage applications during the weekend,” said Rick Allen, chief operating officer of Mortgage Marvel. “But in 2012 we saw what we-ve seen year after year. Only about 15 percent of applications come in on Saturday or Sunday. Of the applications coming in during weekdays, about 60 percent are submitted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
“You have to assume that most people applying for a mortgage are employed, so they-re obviously spending a bit of their workday on their mortgage application. In fairness though, many applications come in over the lunch hour, and it-s also likely that people are doing regular work outside what we traditionally consider to be normal hours. Technology has given us more flexibility in all aspects of our lives.”
Allen also noted that 62 percent of people who apply for a mortgage online complete their application in only one session. It-s a simple, intuitive process that takes about 30 minutes to complete, he said. If people have to come back for more than one session, it-s usually because they are interrupted or have to find some specific information, such as income from a previous job.
“People appreciate being able to complete an application on their schedule and at their pace,” Allen said. “We expect the number of online applications to continue to grow for many years to come.”
Kelly Walsh, a human resources consultant and owner of 1 Smart Life, a personal coaching firm, believes smart employers will make room for employees to do these types of tasks during work hours.
“There are just some things that can-t be done after regular work hours, like talking to teachers, reaching doctors- offices or conducting banking,” Walsh said. “Employers who give their people a little time to take care of a few personal things during the work day enjoy increased loyalty from their team and usually get more than they give. Those employees will be the ones answering e-mails from home in the evening and producing more at work because they aren-t distracted and stressed.”
