NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwired) — 05/30/13 — MultiTouch Ltd., the world leader in interactive display systems, today announced the largest AV project in the world involving the use of multi-touch displays with Australia-based Pro AV Solutions, at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
At a massive 15,000 square feet, the Cube forms the heart of QUT-s new $230 million state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Centre at Gardens Point campus. It is a purpose built interactive video wall space that engages people to touch content and discover facts on ocean life, physics, or learn about the Brisbane floods.
48 Ultra Thin Bezel 55″ MultiTaction Cells, the interactive LCD displays developed by MultiTouch, form the interactive part of the installation, wrapping around the Cube and enabling an unlimited number of people to interact with the same content at the same time. MultiTouch-s unique stacking ability allows the giant installation to work like a single display for hundreds of people interacting with it. Mounting for the Cells was accomplished with Chief-s Fusion series pull-out mounts.
The interactive displays seamlessly integrate with the non-interactive part of the Cube which is provided by six Panasonic projectors, five 32×32 matrix switchers and three video wall processors. Four separate cat6 networks connect the custom built SGI servers to the displays, including video and multi-channel audio, touch information from the displays, animation synchronization and installation management, and a total of 6 miles of structured cabling was installed.
An AMX AV management system controls the entire installation alongside MultiTouch-s own MultiTaction Site Manager, the first remote management system to manage and monitor up to thousands of geographically distributed interactive displays.

“The way we saw it,” explains Philip Holtum of Pro AV, “we were creating the ultimate scholastic tool and a new cultural icon. When you look at it from that angle, there-s no room for shortcuts. The finished piece was going to have to be the best it could possibly be and that means using the best technology and the best brains in the industry.”
Petri Martikainen, CEO of MultiTouch, comments: “There-s no doubt that the Cube looks fabulous, but the modern audience needs more from an installation than good looks. Not only does the touch technology have to be seamless, but the complete AV system has to be managed and monitored and our integration with AMX does just that.”
“For anyone interacting with the Cube, it-s the MultiTaction Cells that lend the installation its magic,” explains Dr. Gordon Howell, associate director, learning environment support at QUT. “Through this innovative technology, we are able to break down the imagined barriers between academia and schoolchildren, making the Cube a centre of scientific exploration for all who care to participate. Looking at this magnificent system, it is hard to fathom that the entire installation was successfully completed with a 6 week program.”
The Cube is open to the public at QUT-s Gardens Point campus in Brisbane, Australia.
