WALTHAM, MA — (Marketwired) — 05/23/13 — Responding to the call from emergency department (ED) providers for improved nursing documentation, Forerun, Inc. (), today introduced major new capabilities for its FlexChart electronic charting solution. Forerun, a leader in delivering innovative electronic charting software for the ED, worked closely with nurses and physicians within Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center () to extend its FlexChart application with the addition of the rich, comprehensive nursing documentation facilities that are essential in the ED environment.
Moving nursing documentation to an electronic charting platform has been a major focus in the ED for several years, according to Kirsten Boyd, BIDMC Director for Emergency Services and Associate Chief Nurse for Ambulatory. “We wanted to improve documentation quality, accessibility to patient information, and standardization of the data being captured during patient encounters,” she said.
BIDMC opted to work with Forerun on the nursing documentation initiative after a successful implementation of FlexChart for ED physicians.
“We actually improved work processes as a result of our collaboration with Forerun,” said Jayne Carvelli Sheehan, Senior Vice President, Ambulatory and Emergency Services at BIDMC. FlexChart nursing documentation went live at BIDMC about a year ago and the feedback from clinicians has been very positive, according to Boyd.
“We were able to train nurses to use Forerun software in about an hour,” she said.
“The fact that all patient data is easily accessible from anywhere in the ED and that we now have an electronic hand-off between nurses and physicians is a major benefit in terms of continuity of care for the patient,” Boyd continued. “And, when the patient leaves the ED, electronic documentation makes it possible for primary care physicians and specialty clinics to see exactly what happened during treatment, resulting in improved communication across the care delivery spectrum.”
“Enhancing FlexChart with extensive nursing documentation capabilities illustrates Forerun-s commitment to providing ED charting solutions that increase productivity, improve communication and support optimum care delivery,” said Forerun CEO Ken Wolfe. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with BIDMC throughout the application development process.”
Forerun FlexChart software with nursing documentation enhancements is available now.
