National Survey Reveals U.S. Workforce Actively Forming Better Nutrition Habits

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 05/22/13 — Keas, the market leader in , today released results from a national nutrition survey that uncovered 73 percent of the U.S. workforce is frequently or always reading nutrition labels, 86 percent is eating breakfast at least 5 days a week and 94 percent is increasing the daily intake of fruits and vegetables. To further support employees in their mission to adopt healthy nutrition habits, Keas also announced new content partnerships with My Healthy Dish and Noshtopia to bolster nutritional content and fuel workplace wellness.

“We know one in four Americans eats fast food twice or more each week. Consumers need apps that will help them make it easy and fun to make healthy eating choices — especially at work, where they spend most of their waking hours,” said Josh Stevens, Keas CEO. “At Keas, we are helping hundreds of thousands of people eat better and lose weight, by making healthy eating a fun, social and mobile experience. The Keas app lets users make significant changes to their nutrition and eating habits, by setting realistic health goals and sharing their progress, challenges and successes with their colleagues.”

The approach to making healthy nutrition changes that will have a positive impact varies by age and region. Trends on the rise include:

Westerners are cutting back on sugar (26 percent) and fried foods (19 percent) more than any region, but no one is eating out less

80 percent of Southwesterners rank salty snacks as the No. 1 vice that would derail their good nutrition efforts

Millennials value encouragement from co-workers (17 percent) and Boomers (13 percent) value being part of a team more than any other age groups

Millennials (32 percent), Southwesterners (20 percent) and Men (15 percent) are eating out less and cooking at home more

In line with trends that point to growing groups of foodies and folks flocking to the kitchen to cook their own meals, Keas is enhancing its educational offerings around healthy eating by partnering with leading nutritional content providers, and . These new partnerships provide users with simple, healthy recipes that offer dynamic meal options that they can incorporate into their everyday lives to help them meet their nutritional goals and improve overall health.

The American workforce knows the importance of getting serious about nutritional health. 63 percent believe fast food and junk food are the leading causes of obesity today and U.S. workers are battling the bulge in a variety of different ways:

52 percent dine out one or fewer times each week

75 percent eat breakfast every day

60 percent eat at least three servings of fruits and vegetables each day

From East to West and Boomer to Millennial, nutritional behavior characteristics differ across gender, region and generation. While some stay up late into the night with late-night cravings, others are snacking away before the workday clock even strikes five.

Americans are actively working to defect from the “Fast Food Nation” by fighting temptation and maintaining healthy, balanced diets. The triggers to steer clear of include fast food and pizza, with Millennials (33 percent), Men (29 percent) and those living in the Southeast (28 percent) citing these foods as what might tempt them to stray from a healthy diet.

Trying to eat healthy throughout the day is no easy feat and more than 70 percent have experienced a “snack attack” at 4:00 p.m. or later. Women (45 percent) succumb to snack attacks at 4:00 p.m. and men (39 percent) at 9:00 p.m., when those in the West (43 percent) and Southeast (33 percent) are most prone to an attack as well.

Nutritional information is a crucial piece of a balanced diet. Boomers get the majority of information from traditional media sources (48 percent), while Generation X (55 percent) and Millennials (52 percent) get the majority from digital media. Millennials are also nearly three times as likely to tap into personal networks as a source.

Keas polled 500 people across the United States that are participating in their employer-offered Keas wellness program, via an online survey between April 4 and April 17, 2013.
