SAN MATEO CA — (Marketwired) — 05/16/13 — Campers, it-s time to tinker! Today, MAKE magazine announces , a free, virtual DIY camp for teens exclusively using the Google+ social media platform, to be held from July 8 to August 16, 2013. Started in 2012 on Google+, more than one million users followed MAKE on Google+ during the six-week period, while campers were introduced to new projects and other special maker experiences including virtual field trips to CERN, NASA, The Smithsonian, National Geographic Institute, Disney Imagineering, and Ford Innovation Lab.
“Maker Camp provides a unique experience for teen makers and their like-minded peers to explore, hack, create and tap their creative juices,” says Dale Dougherty, founder and publisher of MAKE magazine, and CEO of Maker Media. “This is the next generation of makers who will be the innovators of exciting new products and services, and MAKE is delighted to provide the environment that fosters hands-on learning through discovery, essential to this evolution.”
Each morning, campers will be introduced to a new project, maker field trip or experience led by an expert camp counselor, all in the comfort of their own home, on their mobile device or local community space, such as a library or makerspace. A materials list will be posted in advance so campers will have time to gather the supplies they-ll need for the next day-s project. In the afternoon, the teens can join the camp counselor in a Google Hangout to talk about that day-s project or experience, share tips, and ask questions. They-ll also be encouraged to share photos and videos from their completed projects. This year, campers can also connect by joining the Maker Camp Community on Google+ during camp and after it ends.
features all-new projects and maker adventures from MAKE magazine, with themes such as Makers in Motion, Create the Future, Fun and Games, Art and Design, DIY Music and Make: Believe.
