Companies Risking Their Assets With Outdated Software

SAN JOSE, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/18/13 — An astounding 87 percent of corporate computers are missing critical software updates that could threaten business security, according to F-Secure data from around 200,000 workstations mostly in Europe. Among the most common missing updates are those for Java, Microsoft technologies, Adobe Flash Player, Firefox and Open Office.

“From the numbers, it appears many people don-t fully understand that keeping software up-to-date is a critical component of computer and business security,” said , Product Manager at F-Secure. “In fact, 70 to 80 percent of the top ten malware detected by our Labs are exploits targeted against software vulnerabilities.*”

According to the data, 49 percent of corporate PCs and laptops are missing one to four critical updates, 25 percent are missing five to nine, and 13 percent are missing ten or more.

The numbers are striking, especially with attacks on corporations and institutions via software vulnerabilities headlining the news in recent months. The Red October malware for instance, which stole sensitive information from governmental and research organizations as well as companies for five years until it was exposed in January, relied on exploits in Microsoft Word, Excel and Java. These data breaches, all exploiting software vulnerabilities that have long been patched, could have been avoided simply by keeping software current.

“Many of these computers are in terrible shape in terms of data security,” said , Information Security Advisor at F-Secure. “With F-Secure-s Software Updater, these environments are easily kept up-to-date. Software Updater is a proactive patch management feature of F-Secure Protection Service for Business that handles not only patches, but also version updates.”

Keeping all an organization-s software current can be an overwhelming task, which is why it gets neglected. F-Secure-s Software Updater makes the overwhelming simple by ensuring that an organization-s operating systems and third-party applications are up-to-date. It proactively scans computers for missing security updates and patches and deploys them automatically, displaying the results. A manual option is also available for those who want greater control.

Software Updater is unique from other patch management software in that it is part of a comprehensive antivirus solution. Protection Service for Business includes F-Secure-s best-of-breed DeepGuard technology that protects workstations and servers from zero-day attacks — those that exploit vulnerabilities which haven-t yet been patched by the vendor.

“Protection Service for Business is an all-in-one solution for corporate security,” stated Tornikoski. “The fact that it also includes Software Updater saves businesses from having to make extra investments in separate patch management software.”
