Showcasing a Greater Later Life at Hampton Court

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwired) — 04/12/13 — The UK-s leading retirement developer, McCarthy & Stone, will celebrate the wisdom of the ages during the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this summer, when it unveils a spectacular show garden aimed at challenging the pre-conceptions of later life.

To achieve this have enlisted award winning garden designer Chris Beardshaw to create an original and striking conceptual installation which will capture the positivity behind the aging process, whilst honouring the experiences and knowledge offered by the UK-s growing aging population.

Intended to be thought provoking and interactive, the garden will allow visitors to journey through it and to hear specially recorded audio stories from people in their later life that will be captured online through a social media campaign being run on McCarthy & Stone-s Facebook page.

Chris Beardshaw explains: “The audio within the design is a key element in my concept for the garden as I wanted people to be able to engage with the garden in a way that is rarely possible in a show garden. This is after all no ordinary garden, as the essential ingredients are being provided by those celebrating their later life.

“As part of the concept, we-ve broad divided later life into three areas, the first being one of life-s experiences – all those events that have influenced who you are and how you-ve lived your life. The second is of technological advancements – the things you have seen that have revolutionised the contemporary world, and the third is the fashions or trends, that you-ve perhaps rebuffed or even followed. We want to collect all of your stories and hear you enthusing in your own words, then we can use these tales as a catalyst for the direction of the garden.”

The final installation will be on show throughout RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, from 9th to 14th July 2013. Those wishing to get involved by recording their stories can do so directly through the dedicated easy to use application on the McCarthy & Stone , or by emailing a written account of their tale. All entrants will be automatically entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a pair of tickets to the show itself.

Samantha Turner, Group Marketing Director from McCarthy & Stone, added: “Whether the stories we obtain through our Facebook campaign are happy, or sad, uplifting, liberating, or downright funny, they will all help to build up an accurate picture of the country-s wealth of extraordinary people, many of whom have fascinating tales that deserve to be told. Using social media allows us to collect stories from across the country.

“We want this garden to both reflect on the generational shift in the perception of age, and enable greater empathy for the achievements of those in, or approaching their later years. The concept Chris has developed will certainly enable the show-s visitors to learn from the wisdom of the older population whilst drawing upon the synergy there now is between the generations. We are excited to be working alongside him over the coming months while his unique vision is brought to life.”

McCarthy & Stone is currently selling a range of purpose built throughout the UK. As well as offering a low maintenance lifestyle, purchasers can benefit from maintained landscaped gardens, a central lounge, on site restaurant, domestic assistance, personal care by arrangement and the peace of mind of added security.
