InterNetX is the first SWITCH partner to offer DNSSEC for .CH and .LI domains

(REGENSBURG, 20. August 2010) – When it comes to secure authentication of domain data, the German registrar InterNetX is one step ahead. InterNetX now offers the security service Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) for .CH (Switzerland) and .LI (Liechtenstein) domains – the first accredited member of the Swiss registry SWITCH to do so. InterNetX has been offering DNSSEC for .SE and .ORG domains for some time now and initial trials for .DE domains are also available via the DENIC test bed.

DNSSEC provides more security on the Internet. The authentication process was specifically developed to combat the dangers of Cache Poisoning, which occurs when an unauthorized third party deliberately interferes with the communication between DNS servers and delivers false data to the requesting server. In this way, Internet users are redirected to fake websites without noticing.

DNSSEC, however, prevents this from happening by forming a chain of trust in the communication between the DNS servers. This is carried out via a digital signature procedure, in which a digital fingerprint is deposited for the relevant domain in the corresponding registry root server. The domain is flagged as holding a DNSSEC signature. If a request is then sent to the root server, the fingerprint of the requesting server is checked against the data in the root zone. The data is verified and the Internet user reliably lands on the correct website.

In the future, InterNetX will also offer DNSSEC for further TLDs like .BIZ or .NET.
