PETALUMA, CA — (Marketwire) — 03/18/13 — (NYSE: CALX) today announced that Lake County () has selected the Calix (ESAP) and (RSG) for a Broadband Stimulus fiber access project across Lake County and eastern Saint Louis County in northeast Minnesota. Lake Connections is managing and building a 2000-mile fiber network for the county, who was selected to receive Broadband Stimulus funding, providing all 18,000 residences and 1000 businesses in the region ultra high-speed data, voice telephony, and advanced video service in the previously underserved area. The $69.8 million project, which includes plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment, is funded by a $66.3 million Broadband Initiatives Plan (BIP) combination of a grant and loan, along with $3.5 million in county investment. With today-s announcement, aggregate Calix vendor selections by Broadband Stimulus winners for “last mile” and “middle mile” awards have now reached over 100 different projects representing over $2 billion in Stimulus-related grants, loans, and private investment.
“When Lake County applied for the Broadband Stimulus funding in 2010, the state of broadband across the county was severely inadequate and holding this rural part of Minnesota back from expanded economic development,” said Jeff Roiland, project manager of Lake Connections. “As the project manager of this network, it has been exciting, now that our construction crews are out in the fields and the early registration numbers are coming in, to see the desire and the demand in the community for broadband at such a high level. As we continue to progress through the 36-month build out, we are looking forward to working with Calix to help transform the broadband experience of these communities.”
Nearing the end of Phase One of the network build, Lake Connections has already received permission from over 70 percent of the residents in the towns of Two Harbors and Silver Bay along Lake Superior to bring fiber to their premises. Supported by both gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and point-to-point gigabit Ethernet (GE) technologies over the Calix E7-2, this fiber network will provide Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) to each business and 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to each residence, with the ability to increase all speeds to 1 Gbps in the future. Lake Connections will also utilize the Wi-Fi enabled 836GE RSGs inside of the customer premises, extending their access network into their subscribers- homes.
“The Lake County region now joins hundreds of other communities and regions across the U.S. enabled to bring gigabit speeds to their citizens — many as the direct result of the Broadband Stimulus program,” said Teresa Mastrangelo, principal analyst at Broadbandtrends. “Calix, with over 100 Stimulus project wins, has proven itself to be a key enabler of this program. While gigabit services initiatives like Kansas City have captured many headlines, Calix customers have also been delivering these speeds to homes, businesses, and anchor institutions throughout the country.”
“We are honored that given a clean slate and the opportunity by the U.S. Broadband Stimulus program to choose the best technology and technology partner to transform from disadvantaged areas into world-class, gigabit connected communities, over 75 percent of Stimulus award recipients have chosen the Calix Unified Access portfolio,” said John Colvin, senior vice president of North America sales and marketing. “As we work side-by-side with service providers like Lake Connections, we are excited by the opportunity for profound transformational impact these gigabit networks will have on the economic development and quality of life of the communities served. We congratulate the citizens of Lake and eastern Saint Louis Counties on the new opportunities afforded the region by this network to compete and grow in the global economy.”
Calix will be exhibiting at the MTA Minnesota Convention & Trade Show, March 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency and DoubleTree Suites in Minneapolis. Come see the Calix E7-2 ESAP, 836GE RSG, and the rest of the Calix Unified Access portfolio at in Booths 35, 36, 51 and 52.
