AppliedMicro Announces Key Technology for Rapidly Expanding OTN Market

ANAHEIM, CA — (Marketwire) — 03/18/13 — OFC/NFOEC — Continuing to pioneer the transition to 100G Optical Transport Network (OTN) in telecommunications and data center networks, Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ: AMCC), also known as AppliedMicro, today announced the TPO215 processor. The device is the industry-s first standalone OTN processor to enable 10 x 10G line cards for OTN cross connect and Packet-Optical Transport System (P-OTS) applications. These applications are seeing tremendous growth as carriers and big data center operators deploy new network technology to meet the ever-increasing demand for network bandwidth, reliability, agility and flexibility.

Infonetics reports that approximately 80 percent of all wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) equipment now supports OTN and forecasts the OTN transport and switching market to grow at a 17 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2011 to 2016.

“AppliedMicro continues to pioneer technologies that will drive a new generation of networking equipment for telecommunications, data center and cloud connectivity,” said George Jones, vice president and co-general manager, Connectivity Products, at AppliedMicro. “The desire to transition to packet-aware optical transport networks requires network equipment vendors to partner with semiconductor companies that have established expertise in the latest optical networking solutions. This processor helps enable the required infrastructure for dramatically improved user experiences.”

Delivering advanced framing, mapping and multiplexing, the TPO215 doubles the capacity of existing OTN framers while providing advanced security features. The product supports 10 x 10G channels for a total capacity of 100G.

“The telecommunications market is currently undergoing a transformational change, and OTN switching is a key piece of that transition,” stated Michael Howard, principal analyst with Infonetics Research. “Companies like AppliedMicro supply critical ingredients that enable this transformation.”

The TPO215 is the newest member of the AppliedMicro comprehensive portfolio of SoftSilicon® OTN processors, which make use of the partial reconfiguration function of underlying field-programmable gate array (FPGA) silicon from Altera, the Stratix V, in a way that is completely seamless to the user and effectively quadruples the size of the silicon.

The TPO215 provides optical data unit (ODU) mapping. The device can map any 8-10G client signal to ODUflex/ODU2, in compliance with all International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standardized mapping methods. The device can also perform hierarchical (de)multiplexing between ODU2 and ODU0/ODU1/ODUflex containers.

The TPO125 device also features OTNsec encryption, an innovative security feature developed by AppliedMicro to ensure comprehensive security during transport of information over “shared” networks. Unlike traditional encryption methods that only encrypt packets or client payloads, OTNsec security encrypts the entire container for transport across an OTN network and provides secure transport of any OTN client, including Fibre Channel, SONET and Ethernet.

AppliedMicro will demonstrate the TPO215 processor during the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (), from March 17-21 in Anaheim, CA.

The TPO215 processor is available now and an evaluation platform for the product is available upon request.
