NEW ORLEANS, LA — (Marketwire) — 03/04/13 — , a global leader in software for connected care, announced that the Healthcare Information Xchange of New York (HIXNY) has leveraged the strategic informatics platform to achieve electronic health record (EHR) interoperability, which has resulted in a significant increase in provider adoption. In 2012, a total of 421 organizations — 23 hospitals and 398 practices — connected to HIXNY.
To date, seven EHR and hospital information system vendors, which serve over 50% of the region-s practices, have achieved interoperability with HIXNY-s health information exchange (HIE), enabling providers to retrieve and contribute real-time patient data directly into their native EHRs without disrupting clinician workflow. In 2012, HIXNY established bidirectional EHR interfaces at 186 practices, exceeding its original goal by 55%. Independent and hospital-owned practices are also able to share and access patients- community health records in the form of Continuity of Care Documents (CCDs) and electronically receive lab and radiology results and discharge summary notifications from participating hospitals.
“Achieving proven interoperability with our HIE was an essential component in building the critical mass and participation among providers, and HIXNY hit its stride in 2012 to deliver an interoperable solution,” said Mark McKinney, CEO of HIXNY. “Enabling physicians to work within their own EHR system to access and contribute patient information through HIXNY improves the speed and security with which this information is delivered, adding more value to providers and improving the quality of patient care.”
Other 2012 milestones for HIXNY included the connection of more than 20 specialty practices and 626 physicians, nurse practitioners and physician-s assistants; enabling real-time results delivery for labs and radiology tests to 55 practices; and conducting 500 million clinical transactions.

As a result of reaching these milestones, HIXNY created the technical framework necessary for the Adirondack Medical Home Pilot to be successful. The Adirondack Medical Home is a joint initiative of medical providers and public and private insurers to transform health care delivery in a predominately rural area. HIXNY enabled access to the HIE for nearly 200 physicians in the Adirondack region by connecting five participating hospitals, 24 primary care, and 10 specialty practices to the HIE through their EHRs. Since it has begun participating in the Adirondack Medical Home, HIXNY has delivered more than 570,000 CCDs to a quality data center that was established to measure and improve care efficiency and patient outcomes.
