Food For The Poor Extends Its Reach With the Help of NComputing Virtual Desktops

SANTA CLARA, CA — (Marketwire) — 01/23/13 — , the largest international relief and development organization in the United States, has outfitted 94 orphanages throughout the Caribbean and Latin America with virtual desktops to bring IT and education access to thousands of children. NComputing products were chosen because they offer desktop and ICT access at 75 percent less overall cost, 90 percent lower energy consumption, and require negligible maintenance and support compared with traditional PCs. Overall, the technology access initiative has made available almost 11,000 seats across 17 countries.

Part of Food For The Poor-s mission is to help educate children in developing countries so they have a chance to better their lives. Because the organization faces infrastructure and resource challenges in many of the regions it works in, including lack of consistent electricity and access to skilled technicians, an innovative approach was needed to make computing access and IT-based education access a reality.

“NComputing virtual desktops meet our needs perfectly. Once deployed, they have practically run themselves, and we have never had maintenance issues,” said Angel Aloma, executive director of Food For The Poor. “The low purchase price and minimal ongoing running costs mean that we are able to make desktop computers available to thousands more children. In our quest to end poverty, education and technology might be our best tools.”

Raj Dhingra, CEO of NComputing, added, “PC expansion has been a key and successful strategic initiative for NComputing. By overcoming the challenges of cost, complexity and consumption of resources associated with PCs, we have made desktop computers economically viable where previously they were not — without compromising performance. We are proud of our role in bringing millions of people in developing countries around the world access to computing, and remain committed to transforming the economics and performance capabilities of virtual desktops. This is democratization of IT in action.”

NComputing-s award-winning, patented technology lowers desktop computing costs, improves manageability, and reduces energy consumption and e-waste compared to any other alternative.
