ATLANTA, GA — (Marketwire) — 12/20/12 — Nivis, a global leader in Smart Grid and Industrial Wireless networks, participated in another successful Internet Protocol for Smart Objects (IPSO) Alliance interop held in conjunction with the 85th IETF meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Building upon previous events, the latest interop focused on Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) devices engaged in AMR (electric metering), Lighting and Load Control. The event focused on two interoperability frameworks, the communication framework and the application framework.
The communication framework focused on interoperability of MAN/NAN devices that use the IEEE-defined 802.15.4g FSK PHY standard that targets Smart Utility Networks. The participants successfully tested interoperability of the Common Signaling Mode, support for which is mandatory for all 802.15.4g devices, and dynamic mode switching, which allows devices to communicate at the higher bit rates that are part of the standard. During the 802.15.4g FSK PHY session of the interop event, the Nivis 802.15.4g implementation was successfully tested for interoperability with Landis + Gyr meters using a completely different hardware platform.

The application framework testing centered on ensuring interoperability between different COAP implementations. The participants showcased an ecosystem where vendors could monitor and control each other-s lights and load control devices. Nivis, NXP, Sensinode and Proto 6 devices successfully exchanged application payloads compliant with the IPSO Application Template.

These networks will offer wide geographic coverage and will transport data for Smart Objects engaged in a variety of other applications. In October, at the Freescale® Semiconductor Technology Forum in Tokyo, Nivis and Freescale launched a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Development Kit that features a standards-based communications stack utilizing 802.15.4g, 802.15.4e, 6LoWPAN, CoAP, UDP and RPL. The kit utilizes Freescale-s MC12311 Sub-GHz transceiver and Freescale-s Kinetis® 32-bit ARM® Cortex-M4 microcontroller with built in crypto acceleration. The kit allows users to build a wireless network quickly -out of the box,- integrate it with user hardware and then evaluate network performance in a real environment. Network endpoints can be accessed with a full range of IPv6 commands sent directly to the device from any Internet browser.
