IRVINE, CA — (Marketwire) — 04/17/12 — WTI, a respected leader in the field of , products and solutions, has announced that all IP enabled WTI products now provide dual support for both IPv4 and IPv6 (the planned successor to IPv4).
“Although full, world-wide implementation of IPv6 is still a ways off, we-re already seeing applications that have started to use the new, expanded, addressing protocol,” said WTI Sales Manager Joseph Brodski. “Ever since the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the first widespread debut of IPv6, we-re seeing more and more situations where IPv6 has become mandatory; both the nation of China and the US Federal Government are already recommending IPv6 compatibility for all new equipment purchases, and the cellular industry and many other large corporate network based industries are also specifying IPv6 as the new standard.”
The reason for the shift to IPv6 is simple; given the rapid growth of the internet, available IPv4 format addresses are quickly being depleted, and the expanded address format allowed by IPv6 is needed to provide billions upon billions of additional addresses in order to allow the internet to continue to grow. Whereas the existing IPv4 format uses 32 bit long addresses and allows about 4.3 billion possible IP addresses, the new IPv6 format uses 128 bit long addresses, allowing about 3.4×10^38 possible IP addresses; a figure that the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) describes as being sufficient to cover the multitude of new devices and websites that will be added to the internet in the foreseeable future.
